How to Get a Marriage License Step by Step 💍✨
Planning your big day? Before you say “I do,” you need to get your marriage license! Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to make the process smooth and stress-free:
1️⃣ Check Your State’s Requirements 📝
Every state has its own rules! Look up the specific requirements for your state or county—things like age, identification, and waiting periods.
2️⃣ Gather Your Documents 📑
You’ll typically need:
✅ A valid photo ID (passport, driver’s license, or state ID)
✅ Birth certificates (sometimes required)
✅ Divorce decree (if previously married)
✅ Death certificate (if a previous spouse passed away)
3️⃣ Apply for the License 🏛️
Most applications are done in person at your county clerk’s office, but some places allow online applications first. Both partners usually need to be present!
4️⃣ Pay the Fee 💲
Fees vary by location, ranging from $25 to $100+. Some states require cash or money orders, so check ahead!
5️⃣ Wait for Approval ⏳
Some states issue the license immediately, while others have a waiting period (usually 24–72 hours). Plan accordingly!
6️⃣ Pick Up & Use Your License 💍
Once approved, your license is valid for a set period (usually 30–60 days). You must have your ceremony before it expires!
7️⃣ Get Married & Sign the License 🥂
Your officiant and witnesses (if required) will sign the license during your ceremony.
8️⃣ Return the Signed License 📩
Your officiant files it with the county to officially record your marriage. Then, you can request certified copies for your records!
That’s it—you’re officially married! 🥰💖 Need an officiant to make your day even more special? I’d love to help! 💕
