Finally sharing a bit more of the beautiful recipe book I had the pleasure of creating. Each recipe came with a beautiful note from the family member of friend that had shared it explaining why it was their favourite recipe or why it reminded them of the recipient. I loved writing out each note in calligraphy to be treasured inside the book for hopefully a long time to come!

Place cards // I was so thrilled to be able to play a small part in Claudia and Rich’s intimate ceremony last weekend. ⁣

After having to twice move their big party (bring on 2021!) they managed to have a gorgeous intimate garden ceremony with their nearest and dearest. ⁣

I love how they incorporated the gorgeous garden vibes in their set up. ⁣

So happy to see this wedding online today. Loved creating all the on-the-day stationery and signage for this gorgeous couple’s wedding day at Clapton Country Club as well as addressing their invitation envelopes.⁣..⁣
They went with a gorgeous blue and gold watercolour wash look that complemented the rustic flowers and the stunning venue perfectly. Love looking back on this beautiful day! ⁣..⁣

Wrapping paper // Most wrapping papers aren’t recyclable but simple brown paper is! Made my own wrapping paper with nothing but kraft paper and a couple of pens. Wrapped my husband’s anniversary gift in it for today. The fact that it’s handmade makes the whole gift even more special. Give it a try! @ London, United Kingdom

From cakes to stationery to flowers to photographers to photo booths. There are so many working parts to a wedding - and we wanted to come together as a little community of suppliers to let you know that we are so thankful for your support.

Coronavirus has been a real bummer this year (to say the least) and we all wanted to say we cannot wait until we can see you again to help pull together your beautiful wedding.

We 🥰 appreciate🥰 each and every one of our customers, and have seen in this uncertain time how unity and community have managed to support and lift everyone’s spirits. As part of this big wedding community, we wanted to say thank you for trusting us with so many pieces of your wedding. We can speak for each other in one way alone, and that’s to say, just how much we appreciate everyone who is supporting our small businesses during this time. When you choose us, you’re choosing to support your local community as that’s where our hearts lie.

Please help to further support our businesses by sharing this message of 🙏🏼thanks🙏🏼

Personal Touch // Everything I make is so personal to my client, which is a big part of what I love about what I do. ⁣

It really couldn’t be more personal than something carefully handwritten, just for you.⁣

I’m thinking of starting to send some personal notes and letters to people whose addresses I have and perhaps give you something to pass on to a loved one of yours. In times like these, now more than ever we need to maintain personal contact with those we know and love. ⁣

If you want to receive something from me in the coming weeks, DM me your address and I’ll start to figure out what this is going to look like!

Photography // Here’s the Instagram vs. reality photo from yesterday’s post! The cats love to...help.⁣

My product photography is generally done on my dining table or by the window for the best light. ⁣

Sometimes I use our side table on top of the dining table to balance my phone for filming.⁣

So there you go, a little behind the scenes look of what really happens! ⁣

I’ve been thinking about getting some proper photography done, maybe in a couple of months, but it’s hard thinking about how to prepare for that! Probably just need to bite the bullet don’t I… ao mean I have time on my hands right now!

Tools & Materials // Well I wouldn’t be a calligrapher if I didn’t have a drawer over-flowing with pens, nibs, ink and lord knows what else would I?? ⁣

I showed you the chaos of my pen drawer in the ‘authentic space’ post a few days ago, so I’ve picked out a few of my favourite tools to show you this time. ⁣

As a left-hander I’m ‘supposed’ to use a straight pen holder, and I do love my Moblique when I’m writing more upright styles. But I’m also totally in love with my custom lefty oblique that let’s me write a bit more fluidly sometimes. Depending on my mood and the writing I’m doing, I’ll be using one or the other of these most of the time! ⁣

My favourite nibs are Nikko/Zebra G’s and the Brause 361 ‘Blue Pumpkin.’ I occasionally play with other nibs, but I always end up coming back to these two. ⁣

As for inks, the options are endless! makes great colours, or I mix my own with gouache, and you can’t go wrong with classic black sumi. ⁣For metallics, there is nothing better than a gold palette.

Just a tiny selection of my favourite tools! What are your favourite creative tools?

Change // Well a lot has certainly changed lately!⁣ But I wanted to use today’s post to look back at my journey so far.

My first real calligraphy project was my own wedding, and I loved creating all the pieces from the invitations, to the order of service, the menus and placecards to the big table plan. ⁣

But I look back now and slightly cringe at my TERRIBLE digitising of my lettering, and my very average flourishing attempts. Lol⁣

So I like to think things have changed a bit for the better! Having said that, my style hasn’t actually waivered very far from this, I’ve just refined it and improved my technique. So I guess I knew what I liked back then, I’m just better at creating it now! ⁣

I do like to look back at this and appreciate where I was at that time in my life. And it’s nice to see that things have improved, especially on days when I feel like I’m not getting a single thing right.⁣

What’s the biggest change for you in the last few years?

Marketing // The most effective type of marketing is word-of-mouth marketing. That’s just a fact. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
In this really difficult time for creative businesses like mine, I think today’s post is the perfect opportunity to remind everyone of that. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
If you’ve used a small business for anything recently - in my case maybe you’ve been to one of my workshops, or I’ve made you a custom print or your wedding stationery - now is the time to show that business that you’re grateful and in turn you’ll be helping their business reach more people. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Write them a review (you can find me on Google to review), shout about them on social media, recommend them to friends who might benefit from their services when we’re all back to normal again. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Show small businesses you care by telling the world about them. That kind of marketing is the kind money can’t buy. ⁣

Thanks to for the perfect graphic. @ Peckham

Packaging // I keep all the packaging I get from my own orders and keep them to re-package and send my things off to their new owners. ⁣

So far I’ve not had to buy any new boxes (maybe a sign that I order too many things online…hmm…) but I know it’s inevitable and not so far away, so I’m all ears for any good packaging suppliers! ⁣

I do try to make packaging my own with my branded (paper) stickers of course!

Learning curve // My while creative business is a learning curve! ⁣

I had a traditional office job for ten years and even when I first went freelance it was in my career of marketing. ⁣

Working out how to make this business work is a constant lesson that I’m still figuring out! What I’m currently finding the biggest challenge is really narrowing down what it is I want to offer. I want to do it all! B that isn’t very helpful to a client wanting to get an idea of what I can offer. ⁣

But I’m getting there! I love the community I’ve grown that is helping me along the way and holding me accountable to make sure I reach my goals!

Authentic space // Well it said ‘authentic’ so here it is… my dining table, a.k.a messy studio desk, my living room floor, a.k.a large sign sketching area and my drawers stuffed with papers, nibs, inks and paints!⠀
⠀
We’re hoping to move house this year and my ultimate goal is to have a separate studio office space, so send good real estate wishes my way! ⠀
⠀
For now, I make this work, with a very patient husband who lets me take over our space quite a bit. And when that gets too much, I’m off to the local café, or co-working with some of my other lovely self-employed community! @ London, United Kingdom

Rough/mock up // Almost nothing I do gets done before many many rough drafts!⁣

Whether it’s custom prints for people’s homes, or wedding signs, every design goes through several versions. Starting with pencil sketches, trying to figure out the spacing and composition, then maybe a pen sketch to see it more clearly. ⁣

After several versions, I’ll finally get the calligraphy nibs out for a first ‘proper’ draft. Then it’s probably a few more of those before I’m ready to take out the final paper I’m using. ⁣

All that work is so worth it when the final version looks just right though! ⁣ @ Peckham

Love to make // I love creating bespoke prints for people. It makes me smile to think that there are words written by me hanging in people’s homes! ⁣

I love everything about the wedding stationery I get to create, but there’s something special about creating a one-off piece for someone. ⁣

This is the second version of this quote I’ve done, and I’m so excited to be taking this one to Sri Lanka with me to give to a group of young women that I’ve known for a few years now who inspire me every day (swipe to see them with the two charity founders).⁣

On International Women’s Day, I want to shout out to them – I’ve been a trustee of a Sri Lankan Children’s Charity, , for a while, and these girls have been part of our work since they were young. ⁣

Now they’re growing into amazing young women who are discovering opportunities that would have once seemed impossible to them. But now, thanks in part to our charity and in larger part thanks to their own hard work, it is becoming the possible. ⁣

I love this quote and I think it nicely sums up their path. ⁣

Can’t wait to see these incredible women soon. @ Peckham

You // It’s me! Looking particularly happy because this was actually on my engagement shoot with Mr G&F, having a grand old time exploring our Peckham neighbourhood. ⁣Photo by the ever talented .

So if we haven’t met yet, my name is Marianne and I’m the founder of Grace & Flourish. I love creating beautiful words for client events and I love teaching others the art of calligraphy too. I basically just enjoy doing a thing I love and making others happy doing it! ⁣

Outside of this account, my favourite things to do are travel the world with the husband (we’re off to Sri Lanka in two days!), and when we’re home I love snuggling with our two floof balls (cats, to you) and watching more Netflix than is probably good for me (Love Is Blind anyone?!?!). ⁣

I’m a Virgo and apparently I live up to that expectation, I’m an only child and apparently I DON’T live up to that expectation (I think both of those are compliments…). ⁣

I love cheese, salt and vinegar crisps, yoga and fresh flowers. ⁣

How about you? Would love to meet some new people here!

Reducing waste // My biggest steps towards reducing waste are more in my personal life than in my business, but as you can see from the photo, my calligraphy makes it all the more enjoyable! ⁣

I’ve become pretty obsessed with our local refillery store that stocks SO MUCH stuff, it’s amazing. I love taking our jars and bottles there to fill up again, and I mean, obviously I had to label them… It’s just common sense.

It’s a bit different to my usual work, but I’ve been toying with the idea of selling these designs as labels for your own bottles and jars. Would you buy them if I did? ⁣

When it does come to the business side of things, I certainly do what I can. I order a lot of things, from paper to nibs, to new inks and practice pads, new pens…⁣

Every time I receive my own package in an envelope or box that I can open without destroying, I keep them safe to re-use whenever I can. After all it’s what’s inside the package that really matters!⁣

Of course, I also use up a whole lot of paper! I’m loving the trend towards recycled and handmade paper with clients – it means I can feel a little less guilty about all that stock! ⁣

I’ve also started creating big signs on glass and acrylic that can ‘usually’ be wiped clean and re-used. ⁣

I once saw the phrase ‘It doesn’t help if a small number of people do everything. What helps is if a lot of people do something.’ So I’m trying to do something.⁣

Has anyone else found interesting ways to reduce waste?

Close up // I love the look of shiny Finetec as it dries! ⁣

I love stepping back to admire the gorgeous ways ink and paper combine on the page. Especially when it’s in shiny metallic rose! ⁣

After all, I do this job to enjoy making beautiful words, so if I didn’t stop to take in the little things that bring me joy, what would be the point? 🙂⁣

One could argue that especially when it comes to wedding calligraphy, what I make is a small close up detail in a very big day full of plenty of other components. But it’s the little details, like someone’s name written out beautifully, or a wonderfully tactile menu card, that bring little sparks of joy to those who come across them. ⁣

And that’s why I love what I do. ⁣

Do you remember any little joyful details, maybe from your own wedding, or a friend’s wedding? I hope it brings a smile to your face to remember it!

Branding // Check out my gorgeous letterpressed business cards, printed at the Ink and Paper London studio! (Photo credit is hers too!)⁣

As a calligrapher I felt that my branding really had to have my calligraphy featured. And quite frankly, I am not a graphic designer nor will I pretend to be one, but pretty words I can do! ⁣

I love blues of all shades, pale mint/aqua greens and metallic colours, so the branding for my calligraphy hasn’t strayed far! ⁣

But even though this is essentially my name in calligraphy, it wasn’t easy figuring it out and how I wanted it to look. And honestly now I look at it and just want to re-do it! Never satisfied…⁣

But I’m going to let it lie for now. Check back in a few months and see what things look like, haha.⁣

What are your favourite colour combinations?

Hands at work // Calligraphy is certainly a hands-on job! ⁣

It’s pretty normal during a day of calligraphy for my hands to be pretty inky. No matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to avoid it! But as long as it’s on me and not on the paper, I don’t mind. I blame being left-handed… ⁣

I think the fact that it is such a hands-on activity is why I love calligraphy so much. Focusing on the shapes, the pressure of the nib, the composition… it forces me to take my mind off of anything else that might be distracting me at the time. ⁣

My workshop attendants regularly talk about how mesmerising it is to watch and to do! ⁣

It’s why calligraphy is such a good, unique, way to practice mindfulness. Get out of your own head and focus on those hands!
