Tinikling is a traditional Philippine folk dance which originated during the Spanish colonial era..The dance involves two people beating, tapping, and sliding bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in coordination with one or more dancers who step over and in between the poles in a dance. Someone who dances the Tinikling imitates the movements of a tikling bird (hence, tikling-like) as the bird walks over the grass or dodges bamboo traps set by Filipino farmers on vast rice fields. WItness our very own Tinikling Dancers Catherine Reena and Monica Miranda as they perform this Saturday!

We are pleased to announce that Mr. Raymond Smith, SVDG, President of NY PHIL-AM Lions Club, will lead the Filipino Day Grand Parade on July 9th as our Grand Marshal.

Mr. Smith is a revered member of our community recognized for years of his philanthropic work.

Mr. Smith has positively impacted the Filipino-American community through his humanitarian efforts, such as aiding 300 unemployed Filipinos in the Philippines by providing sacks of rice, canned goods, and other essential needs. In addition, he spearheaded the shipment of 20 boxes of clothes and 200 hundred eyeglasses to victims of typhoons that badly hit the Philippines in 2020. In addition, NY PHIL-AM Lions Club organized feeding programs, served 300 recipients in one of the towns of Loboc, Bohol, Philippines, and planted 3,000 mangroves as its environmental project.

Under his guidance, NY PHIL-AM Lions Club has become the largest club in District 20-R2, going from 21 members to 242 members. He founded a new charter club, the Builders for Hope, and formed 14 more branches.

Mr. Smith has participated and partnered with seven non-Lion organizations giving free Medical, Dental, and Humanitarian mission to 11 provinces in the Philippines that served approximately 12,000 recipients.

Raymond Smith is a six-year veteran of the United States Navy, 4 of those on active duty. After his military career, he worked in various occupations, most recently as General Manager of Coinmach Laundry Corporation and the Laundry Machine Installation Department in New York City until 2010, when he retired after 25 years of dedicated service with the company.

Mr. Smith is married to Nena Lozada Smith, founder of The Red Poinsettia Charitable Foundation and the Mrs. Philippines America pageant. Mrs. Lozada Smith is a formidable philanthropist and community leader in her own right, and together, Mr. and Mrs. Smith make an unstoppable force serving the Filipino-American community.
