Here's how to send your favorite Kinema film as a present:

2. Click the “Watch Now Rental” button
3. Under the rental price, check the box “Send as Gift”
4. Enter as many gift recipients as you’d like!
5. Click “Apply” then pay. You’re done!

A good first step is understanding your options. There are many ways to distribute your film, each with its own advantages and challenges. Put together a plan and distribution strategy that works best for your goals.

Film distribution can take many forms and this is not all inclusive. Tell us, what did we miss?

📽️ THEATRICAL RELEASE
DEFINITION: Exhibition to the paying public at a commercial cinema
ADVANTAGES: Opportunity for more critical acclaim • Easy for audiences to access • Distributor covers marketing
CHALLENGES: Requires acquisition • Losing many of your rights • Loss of control in marketing • Involves physical assets

💻 SVOD
DEFINITION: A service or platform that delivers your film (or series!) directly to subscription-based users over the internet
ADVANTAGES: Popular and easy to access for most consumers • No physical assets needed
CHALLENGES: Requires acquisition • Audience paywalls • Some are all-rights buyers • Involves marketing • Must perform well to continue being licensed by streamer

⏯️ TVOD
DEFINITION: Viewers pay for each piece of content on-demand digitally either as a pay-per-view rental or purchase for permanent access
ADVANTAGES: Can utilize an aggregator • Subscription isn’t needed • Easy to access for audiences • More affordable, lower upfront costs
CHALLENGES: Usually rev-share only, so no MG • Involves heavy marketing and direct outreach • High competition

🎞️ COMMUNITY CINEMA
DEFINITION: The distribution of films outside of traditional cinema venues through various alternative channels
ADVANTAGES: Easier to reach specific audiences • Lower upfront costs • Ability to recoup licensing fees • Keep more rights • Ability to include resources
CHALLENGES: Involves heavy marketing and direct outreach • Goals will not be to have the film be widely available, but rather to reach specific people • Less opportunity for critical acclaim

📼 PHYSICAL MEDIA
DEFINITION: Distribution of movies on DVDs and Blu-Ray discs
ADVANTAGES: Can be sold directly to consumers and retailers • Can offer supplemental features and bonus content
CHALLENGES: Market is declining due to streaming services • Production and distribution of physical goods is expensive

▶️ AVOD & FAST
DEFINITION: Advertising-based Video on Demand or streaming
ADVANTAGES: Can utilize an aggregator to get on platforms • Audience subscription not always required • Free for audiences
CHALLENGES: Revenue can be very low • Usually rev-share only, so no MG • Involves heavy marketing and direct outreach • High competition

🎥 DIY Theatrical
DEFINITION: Companies enter into for-hire or revenue share agreements with filmmakers
ADVANTAGES: Ability to get your film into theaters without an acquisition • Specialized strategy and dedicated attention • Negotiable revenue share and upfront costs • Participation in marketing
CHALLENGES: Upfront costs • Company still curate their clients • Often requires additional marketing and PR budget

✈️ Additional Non-theatrical
DEFINITION: Airlines, Cruises, University Libraries, Hospitals, Prisons, US Military, and more
ADVANTAGES: MG or acquisition price offered • Access new and hard to reach audiences • Typically free for audiences
CHALLENGES: Requires acquisition or representation to access • Often require exclusive rights

Last week, Kinema participated in a panel at DOC NYC's Distribution Day on the topic "Own Your Audience, Own Your Success." 🎥✨

Alongside moderator Jon Reiss and our fellow panelists from Gathr and Jolt.film we explored how filmmakers can build direct connections with their audience and take charge of their distribution journey.

Here's 4 tips we agreed on!

1. Don't make direct distribution your last choice. Build marketing and distribution into your production budget to give yourself autonomy and bargaining power when receiving offers.

2. Be very specific in your primary goal: Is it Money, Impact, Awards, or Audience?

3. Make a plan. Think about what an ideal 1-2 year release would look like. Explore how windowing would work (or not work) for your film.

4. Audience acquisition isn't easy - will you build, buy, or partner? Build a following for yourself as a filmmaker, buy your audience through advertising and influencer marketing, or partner/pitch to nodes & networks that reach your audience. Or all three!
