Farm Update
I hope you are all having a great start to 2025! The mild winter has made winter tasks a little easier this year. Although we are months from having flowers available, there are quite a few that have already been planted.
1. Larkspur- I love this flower!! I had beginners luck the first year I grew it. That amazing year was followed by two seasons where I hardly had any usable stems. After some research, trial, and error, I think I cracked the code last year. Although it is recommended to direct seed, I decided to start them in seed trays. Complete darkness and cool temps are also important, so I placed the covered seed tray in a cool shed that was kept between 45-50 degrees. After 2 weeks, I was thrilled to see almost 100% germination!! So I tried it again, and yippee, it worked!! Larkspur loves to get started in cool temps. This first succession is growing in the high tunnel, and the rest will be planted outside starting in March.
2. Volunteer pansies are popping up in happy little spots all around the high tunnel.
3. The last of the dahlia tubers were divided and tucked into storage this week. I normally like this task to be done in November, but it didn't work out this year!! I was very thankful for the mild temperatures when I was washing them outside!! Brrrr!!
4. Seed starting is in full swing. Some of the flowers started in the last 2 weeks include stock, poppies, lisianthus, sweet peas, and snapdragons. Pictured in the 4th slide are the cutest little snapdragon seedlings that will hopefully be blooming in time to be tucked in a Mother's Day bouquet!!
5. The last picture might look like a bunch of mud and compost. But if you look closely, you will see the sides of our new high tunnel. Another project that was supposed to happen in November, oh well!! By mid-February, it will be filled with ranunculus, anemones, and a few other cold loving flowers.
Thanks for following along!! Stay warm, and have a great week!!
❤️ Stacey
