Thailand is pressing ahead with its clean energy plans with what claims to be the world’s largest hydro-floating solar project at Sirindhorn Dam, Ubon Ratchathani province.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) is using smart technology to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by deploying Siemens’ Sicam Microgrid Control and Photovoltaic Plant Control to balance the energy mix generated.

The project is the first installation of microgrid control, photovoltaic plant control and distributed energy optimisation (DEOP) in Thailand. It has a solar power generation capacity of 45 megawatts and a hydroelectric capacity of 36 megawatts, capable of generating electricity from renewable sources day and night.

This project will enable the country to transition to electric power generation in a new context that requires energy stability and security amid economic, social, and environmental changes.

The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) of Ontario has partnered with govtech software company, UrbanLogiq, to deliver a province-wide cloud platform that will expand assessment data use to support municipal needs.

The new tool comes with the roll-out of the new Municipal Connect platform, the primary source of assessment-related information available online for Ontario municipal staff.

UrbanLogiq reports it will jointly co-develop and deploy use cases for MPAC to provide additional value-added services to its 444 member municipalities making its data easier to work with and optimised to more quickly answer common questions and queries by municipal staff.

The application of 5G technology has made smart first-aid service possible, and ambulances equipped with 5G connection have been launched in Beijing.

With 5G communication devices, doctors can make remote diagnoses of critical patients while the ambulance is on the way, and instruct first responders aboard to make pre-surgery preparations while getting ready for necessary operations themselves. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said at a press conference on Tuesday that more than 600 top-class hospitals across the country have adopted 5G first-aid and remote diagnosis applications.

A £7bn new park town development in the London borough of Barnet is using drone flight management and image processing software to improve the efficiency of groundworks surveys and how it communicates progress of the new neighbourhood.

Site Scan from geographic information system (GIS) software and location intelligence and mapping specialist Esri UK is being used to create high quality geospatially-enabled outputs to be shared amongst all stakeholders as the development progresses.

Outputs include 3D point clouds which have been helping construction managers, technical teams and contractors understand how changes in site topography will impact the site and for performing volumetric calculations, on how much earth needs to be excavated and removed.

Video, static images and 360-degree panoramas have been used to provide project teams, investors and the public with engaging visual updates on construction progress and by legal teams when working on leases with potential tenants.

Glasgow Airport is building a solar farm as part its ongoing commitment to decarbonising its infrastructure and achieving net-zero by the mid-2030s.

The c15MW solar farm is in the early stages of development and expected to be operational by summer 2023 subject to planning approval. The plant is the latest in a number of initiatives the airport and its parent group, AGS Airports, is undertaking to support the journey to net-zero.

The 30-acre on-site, ground mounted solar farm will give Glasgow Airport the capability to generate enough power for the airport campus and neighbouring businesses. It reports this is equivalent to powering almost 20 per cent of homes in the city of Glasgow (approximately 52,000 households).

Dubai’s Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) and Digital Dubai have launched the first stage of a data-based project to digitally transform transport in the city.

“Dubai in Motion” provides decision-makers with insight into public transport movements, designing probable scenarios to make both operational and strategic transport-related decisions. It also provides information about areas that welcome tourists, calculates mobility time and periods, and analyses the transport movement before and after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The project builds on a set of specialised data, covering hotels, communities, buses, and taxis, among others, to draw various scenarios dedicated to defining possible improvements to public transport, accessibility, and mobility.

The implementation phase will draw on accidents, airports, events, and metro data, to identify public transport efficacy, traffic at Expo 2020, and external factors influencing public transport. Furthermore, the project depicts future possibilities about green spaces planning, infrastructure, and other vital aspects.

Seoul Metropolitan Government is testing two new models of electric vehicle (EV) chargers to support its pledge of supplying 270,000 EVs and installing 200,000 EV charging stations by 2025.

The streetlight-shaped charger is a 50kW rapid charger, which can fully charged EVs in an hour while the bollard-shaped model is slower to charge but only occupies 0.06 of a square metre.

The streetlight-shaped chargers are also equipped with streetlights, CCTVs for crime prevention, and LCDs. Since slow-speed chargers are set up in most residential areas in the city, the installation of the bollard charger is expected to present a new model for residential areas.

Both are new types of EV chargers for Seoul and can be set up anywhere in alleys and roads, making it convenient for citizens who use electric vehicles to charge their EVs when using restaurants or other commercial facilities or to charge them near their homes when commuting.

Helsinki and Amsterdam are inviting motorists to take part in a study that aims to offer the most socially responsible driving routes in each city.

Code the Streets – an EU-sponsored mobility initiative – asks drivers to test new functions in the traffic navigation app TomTomAmiGO and Mercedes-Benz’ navigation planner, to better understand how to route motorists in a more environmentally aware way.

This includes suggestions on avoiding roads close to schools, residential areas, and parts of the city with high pollution. Users will be shown the fastest route and the ‘social’ route, which will have a short explanation as to the benefits of taking this option.

The initiative is a collaboration between the City of Amsterdam, City of Helsinki, Aalto University, Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS Institute), Forum Virium Helsinki, Technical University Delft and The Future Mobility Network, and is funded by TomTom, Mercedes-Benz and EIT Urban Mobility.

Shanghai’s first drone delivery route, which is expected to open for trial operation in the first half of 2022, has already begun internal testing.

Delivery workers take customer orders to the nearest drone airport, and the service radius of the drone delivery is planned to reach two kilometers with scheduling, takeoff and landing guided by the system. The takeoff and landing airport will be mainly laid out in key business districts and office buildings.

Merchants are required to apply the period of each drone flight in advance. In the future, the drone deliveries are expected to achieve normalization.

The drone delivery system, jointly led by Chinese food delivery platform Meituan and Shanghai Jinshan District, can help delivery workers ease their work intensity as well as improving delivery efficiency.
