Hey all you lovely Leeds crew 🌸

As we get ever closer to our party with Tolu .matheson .touchmyfro on 30/11 it’s now time to share a little more about our other awesome guest on the wheels…

As well as the bio below we strongly advise checking out some of the mixes up on the Dangers Of Jazz Soundcloud, available on her page! We will be sharing over the next days…

Rachel (aka The Dangers of Jazz) is a vinyl DJ from Leeds whose recent projects include her disco and house heavy “Freedom of Movement” club night, as well as a weekly residency at music lovers’ hideaway, .

Originally a guitar and bass player, she got into music through listening to the weird, experimental sounds of progressive rock and jazz fusion – think Genesis, Frank Zappa, Herbie Hancock, Mahavishnu Orchestra. Nowadays, she plays an eclectic mix of deep and (often Latin infused) house music, downtempo chuggers, 12” disco groovers, and anything that sounds good on a gorgeous sound system.

We are absolutely beaming at the prospect Rachel’s set and know this party is going to be an education as well as an amazing dance 🪩

Tix shifting and available in the bio!

🎄York in December🎄

Join us at the Light Studio for a special Christmas dance with the incredible !

Tina wowed us at this past May with an unforgettable set at , selling out and igniting the basement all night. We’re excited to bring her sounds to the York family!

❄️ ❄️ ❄️ ❄️ ❄️

Tina Edwards is a highly respected DJ, broadcaster, curator and music journalist. You’ll hear her regularly on Worldwide FM, BBC Radio 3, Bandcamp Weekly and more. She also hosts the podcast series My Year In Sound, which has featured Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy, Tash LC and Bradley Zero.

Tina is the Editor of Listen Zine and works closely with high-end speaker brand KEF. She’s written for Downbeat, The Guardian, Mixmag, and others.

As a DJ, Tina’s eclectic style has seen her share stages with Coco Maria, Gilles Peterson and Ron Trent. She’s played at festivals such as Lost Village, Wilderness, and Camp Bestival. Her own event, Love Is Everywhere at GROW Hackney, is a bi-annual Jazz Dance party where she blends jazz, samba, Latin, house and more.

Tina has long been a key advocate for UK Jazz, curating shows for artists like Sons of Kemet, KOKOROKO, and Nubya Garcia - supporting them early in their careers. Her passion for the genre also led her to present the BBC 1 documentary Jazz UK: Spitting Fire. She co-runs re:sonate with Tim Garcia, whilst also co-running Q***r Jazz, a platform celebrating LGBTQIA+ jazz artists supported by Arts Council England.

❄️ ❄️ ❄️ ❄️ ❄️

It is a TRUE blessing to throw the York family a dance with one of our heroes and true legend in the game - beloved by everyone for his commitment to the form and community driven ethos. You guys have shown us your love for the Light Studio, now we give back a special party this autumn.

Charlie Dark brings more than just amazing records to the dance - wherever he goes, he’s an ambassador for good and a centre of energy. A mainstay in the capital having been a key component of the culture since back in the day as selector, teacher, poet, artist, speaker, broadcaster and more, founder of the Urban Poets Society and Run Dem Crew, Attica Blues, Mo Wax key player, Blacktronika…the list goes on.

Lockdown essential listening and motivation came to us via the Peace, Positivity and Blessings weekly radio shows on Worldwide FM – giving a huge lift to the week during those testing years. Charlie dropped encouragement and wisdom throughout those beautiful selections, locking in a community spread across the globe.

Following the re-emergence of club and festival life from COVID, Charlie is presently one of the most in demand DJs of the day, with legendary B2Bs at We Out Here, plus truly memorable performances at Love Supreme Festival, Cross The Tracks, My Analog Journal, Giant Steps, Cosmic Slop and beyond. His monthly NTS radio shows are an absolute must for all!

A masterful vinyl selector, Charlie enthuses on the value of heritage tracks spanning all things Soul, Hip-Hop, Roots Reggae, Dub, Disco, House, Jazz plus African and Caribbean flavours…all delivered to the floor with love.

In the words of the man himself - Onwards and Forward We Roll…

🎟️ this is an intimate 120 capacity, so tickets will sell fast. Follow the 🔗 in our bio, with limited £5 tickets available. Final entry for ticket holders is 21:00.

Next up for our DJ picks ahead of Sundays Bank Holiday Dance we have the magic and much loved aka Alilou!

Alilou is a choice selector having span across the city for time, effortlessly dropping in sounds from the Tropics to the Sweetest of Soul 🌸

She also runs the beautiful plants and craft shop in town - an oasis of greenery and wholesome energy 🪴

Here are her picks, absolute magic ✨

Barbara Lynn - Moving on a groove. Absolute 70’s soul classic. How can you not move to this? Perfect for an end of summer dance floor.

The Gaturs - Gator Bait. Heavyweight jazz funk, New Orleans style.

Rebels - Sweetest Taboo (soca) Because it’s Carnival Weekend, because it’s Sade. Nuff said.

We can’t wait to see you on the floor, adv. tix still £7 via RA/ link in bio, £10 otd

Ahead of Sundays Dance we wanted to ask our guests to drop 3 tracks close to their hearts and give you all a little taste of what’s in store in the Light Studio 🪩

First up is good friend and a huge piece of the cities community output - 👑

Deo is much loved for his boundary pushing parties .on.ig firmly in the realm of big sound and the electronic yet taking in everything from DnB to Techno. What started as a night in the University bar has now grown and brought such names as and more, working with and and . Oh and not to forget, warming up for last winter too 🫡

He of course loves all that go to make a Dance-floor groove and plays regularly on the South Banks and set up the ace .nicemusic with our own

In these spaces he fully played a range and feeling that is an insight into a beautiful soul. We can’t wait to have him on the system ✨

Deo’s picks ☝🏻

Aretha Franklin - Just Right Tonight

A slow build that transforms into a beauty of a song, horns, piano, and Aretha’s voice is the cherry on top. Full of soul, life, funk, and energy, this always hits the spot. A fond memory: playing this to my best mate Oli and him replying, “I wish there was a vocal on this’ moments before her voice sets in. The smile on his face was sublime.

Bill Withers - Railroad Man

This was hard. I love Bill Withers, and I love this album. I had to pick one. Railroad Man is deep, it’s subtle, and it makes you want to dance. A builder also, this is Bill at his best. From a technical standpoint, it is un-quantised but sits around 120 bpm, very easily utilised in a house set or thereabouts to inject some attitude and funk into the floor.

MJ Cole - Liquid

Something electronic. Something from a master. MJ Cole has arguably been that for nearly 25 years. It sits somewhere in between melancholy & joy - my favourite place to be. The keys remind me of my Dad playing the Electric Piano every spare moment in the house while I was little.

Tix on sale via RA in our bio at £7 advance/£10 otd so get snapped up!
