These last few weeks I’ve been doing a mini-series exploring tracks by Tuomas Rantanen that have been released on my label

Tuomas Rantanen is a prolific techno producer with over 250 tracks on my label alone. He has a new album Plesiosaur Genera coming next week on Friday 8th November. Follow my label for updates.

Whoop whoop! My weekly show reached Episode 100 last week! I am celebrating with a series of shows playing tracks by Finnish techno producer, Tuomas Rantanen, playing tracks he has been released on my label . He has a new album coming out in December this year, so I felt it was time to pay tribute to his talent.

Tuomas Rantanen has released over 200 tracks on City Wall alone, he is possibly one of the most prolific techno producers of our generation.

His most recent series of album are all inspired by Dinosaurs, I have personally learnt so much about this subject just from these albums! I had the joy of mastering all the tracks too. Other subjects that inspired Rantanen’s music are Cyborg, cyberpunk and also the mechanisation of society since the Industrial Revolution.

Also, If you like numbers, this show was first aired on 10/10 and it was my 100th weekly show. So lots of 10s and 1s and zeros, if that means anything to you :)

My third Ambient Girl album is out today on all platforms via my label City Wall Records.

This is an exploration of sound inspired by my ta***ic stories with bespoke artwork from internationally acclaimed contemporary classical oil painter Iva Troj.

This time, the Ambient Girl finds herself by the ocean, and things start to get a bit weird…

The Ambient Girl is standing on a beautiful sandy beach next to the sea, on her right is a rugged, wild and rocky headland.

As she stands there gazing out to the ocean, the waves rise up and become ferocious. They become so powerful and fierce she is knocked back, back and back until she is flung far up the beach inland. It is shocking to witness this unprovoked attack.

Then I notice just off the nearby headland, a male figure, who is sitting on a rock. The rock he was sitting on is black, darkened, there is seaweed and rock pools around. He coolly stands up and walks over to the sea, close to where she was standing.

In his left hand he holds a staff, which he slowly raises, then he also lifts his right palm and he speaks to the waves.

“Move out of my way”

At this, the storm dies and the waters part to reveal a straight path through the sea. At the end of the path through the sea to what looks like a radiant bright white light.

I am at Pin Mill on the river Orwell. Famous due to an author called Arthur Ransome who was inspired by the place. This photo is actually one of the boats he owned called Selina King.

Arthur Ransome wrote a lot of stories about children having wild adventures on sailing boats, this was known as the Swallows and Amazons series. I’m pretty sure I remember my mum reading me these books as a child.

I feel I was blessed, I mean who reads books to their kids these days?

BIG techno mix for Substantiv - check their Soundcloud - honestly this mix feels great to me, a true reflection of my current sound 🖤

For this week’s Substantiv mix we present Ross Harper. Harper holds a monthly residency with the underground techno party The Luces Phenomena in his hometown Brighton, UK. Here, every DJ set is a blank slate waiting to be written, playing anything from techno, deep house, dark disco, breaks, progressive house, cool ambient and everything in between. A respected producer in his own right, Ross’s productions are rich and varied. Ross is also founding father of City Wall Records. 2023 welcomed ”The Dark Album Remixed”, consisting of 35 remixes by 27 stand out artists. This incredible collection of underground music has already garnered multiple accolades.

Buzzin’ to be playing at 3 UK festivals this year.

A great honour to also be invited to lead the opening and closing ceremonies at Dance Camp East. I don’t underestimate the gravity involved in such a request.

I am reminded of the story of an Indian Guru by the name of Swami Satchidananda who was invited to give the opening speech at a little festival called Woodstock in 1969.

The name Satchidananda translates to “Existence Consciousness Bliss”. Now there is no doubt that there were a lot of drugs taken at Woodstock in 1969 BUT personally I would like to believe that the reason we see those magical videos of people dancing in such blissful abandonment at Woodstock is actually because it is a very power thing indeed to ask a person with a name that means “Existence Consciousness Bliss” to open a festival.

So I really hope I can go a little way toward what Swami Satchidananda brought in what I bring to these beautiful festivals that have invited me to perform, and even more so to Dance Camp East for the special privilege of leading the opening and closing ceremonies.

The Isla Ray Way! We are back! Friday 21st June 🖤

London born and bred, Ross Harper and Anna Bahow have both been playing a monthly slot at Isla Ray for a few months now, for this session we are joined by apaull, an art techno music producer from Canada.

It’s Solstice, it’s the longest day, the moon is almost full, energy is high, come and share it with us at Isla Ray, we are going til 1am, so the perfect springboard for a big night, or just a great way to see out this special day!

Getting festival ready for 2024 🌿🌿🌿

As a special guest of festival I’ll be playing some prime time sets through the week, helping create those special festival memories that last a lifetime.

As a dad (first) as well as a DJ and producer, I’m happy to say this is truly a family festival where children feel safe but also can experience “rites of passage”, so if you are looking for somewhere to go this summer with your children then Dance Camp East has something unique to offer all ages.

I wonder what animals and symbols you see in my abstract forest drawing?

My 8yr old son and I did an art workshop with and (Antonia Hazlewood).

We walked through woodland and with pencil drew the lines we saw without looking at the paper.

Then we sat down with coloured chalk and brought out whatever the randomness was talking to us about.

As I used the chalk, I had no conscious intention of drawing anything specific. What appeared on the page is what appeared on the page. The result is here for you to see.

Heading into UK festival season - wahoo! Excited to share I’ll be playing at Buddhafield in the main dance tent on Thursday 18th July. BF is one of my fave UK festivals, so an absolutely joy to be playing there, it’s totally alcohol and drug free, with recovery areas for people who are struggling with addiction, a matter close to my heart. It’s also possibly the only place I’ve seen more naked people dancing than Berghain 💪🏼

And it’s a great feeling to be living up to my family name - “Harper is an occupational surname….usually this referred to someone who earned his living playing at fairs and festivals.
