We're delighted to say that our next Studio Jazz gig at Lighthouse Poole this Friday 31 January 2025 is a complete sellout: Tony Kofi Tenor Legacy. You may be able to get tickets via returns via the Ticket Office by phoning 01202 280000 and joining the waiting list.

Otherwise, there are still plenty of tickets left for two UK international jazz superstars, appearing together in a very special duo at Lighthouse on Friday 14 February 2025: TOMMY SMITH and GWILYM SIMCOCK.

This is a rare chance to see Tommy Smith in Poole in the intimate confines of Lighthouse Studio. Tommy is one of the world’s leading saxophonists. A presence on the global jazz scene since his teenage years, when he toured internationally with vibes virtuoso Gary Burton’s Whiz Kids quintet, Smith has gone on to record with the definitive jazz label, Blue Note and work with myriad jazz greats, including Chick Corea, Jaco Pastorius, Dame Cleo Laine, John Scofield, Randy Brecker, Jack DeJohnette, Arild Andersen, Dizzy Gillespie and Trilok Gurtu to name but a few. He's released over 30 albums under his own name, for Blue Note Records and others.

Gwilym has carved out a career as one of the most gifted pianists and imaginative composers on the European scene. Hailed as a pianist of ‘exceptional’, ‘brilliant’ and ‘dazzling’ ability, his influences range from jazz legends including Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Jaco Pastorius and Pat Metheny, to classical composers including Maurice Ravel, Henri Dutilleux, Béla Bartók and Mark-Anthony Turnage. Gwilym has toured extensively with the cream of British and international jazz artists including Dave Holland, Kenny Wheeler, Lee Konitz, Bill Bruford’s Earthworks, Bob Mintzer and Bobby McFerrin. He spent five years playing with US jazz megastar, PAT METHENY.

DANIEL CASIMIR SHOW CANCELLED - LIGHTHOUSE STUDIO JAZZ, FRIDAY 17 JANUARY 2025

Unfortunately, due to a serious family illness, Daniel Casimir has had to cancel his much-anticipated Studio Jazz show for us on 17 January 2025. We're very much hoping we can reschedule later in the year but, given the uncertainties, if you have already purchased tickets, Lighthouse will be in touch soon (if they have not already done so) to arrange a refund.

In the meantime, we wish Daniel and his family all the very best.

Our final gig before a Christmas break is on Friday 13 December 2024 (8pm) (as usual, part of the Studio Jazz season at Lighthouse Poole) and features London's mighty Soothsayers.

Still led by founder members IDRIS RAHMAN and ROBIN HOPCRAFT, and featuring JULIA BIEL and KISHON KHAN in a 7-piece lineup, Soothsayers epitomise the cultural melting pot that is London and its global connections. The band's musical journey has been a varied and wonderful one, from the sublime African influences of seminal debut album 'Lost City' through to the jazz infused heavy dub and reggae of more recent albums, to 2022's 'Soothsayers meet Victor Rice and Friends', which fused the classic Soothsayers sound with Brazilian influences.

It should be a fab party night.

We're back this Friday 29 November 2024 in the Studio at Lighthouse Poole with THE XHOSA COLE TRIO. Xhosa, a BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year Winner, sold out last time he came to the Sherling Studio so early booking is advised.

Xhosa will be paying tribute to his musical hero, Thelonius Monk, in this exciting young trio. Xhosa Cole is an embodiment of the success of numerous community arts programmes in Birmingham including the Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra, Jazzlines Ensemble and Birmingham Music Service. He's twice performed at the Proms, received the Parliamentary Jazz Award for ‘Best Newcomer’ in 2019 and Jazz FM ‘Breakthrough act of the year’. Just a reminder, we have an extra special gig this coming Friday 15 November (7.45pm) featuring 3 superstars of jazz: TIM GARLAND'S LIGHTHOUSE TRIO. There are still some tickets left but they are going quick.

This is comfortably the most intimate venue Tim Garland’s Lighthouse Trio will be playing on their 20th anniversary tour, which also takes in the London and Manchester Jazz Festivals. The concert will be accompanied by projections of artwork produced especially for the tour by the Turkish artist Esra Kizir Gokcen. If you don’t know Lighthouse Trio’s work, it’s a fascinating, acoustic exploration of the boundaries between jazz composition and improvisation. As well as saxophonist Tim Garland, the trio also features the legendary Gwilym Simcock on piano, making his first Studio Jazz appearance for many years, and Asaf Sirkis on drums / percussion

In order that everyone can see the projections, capacity is down to 112 in the Studio so, though there are still tickets available, we suggest you book very soon, to avoid disappointment

Tickets via the link below or by telephone (01202 280000) or in person at Lighthouse Ticket Office, subject to availability....

MORE INFO:
Twenty years ago Tim Garland launched his Lighthouse Trio, a truly unique and formidable acoustic band where interplay is paramount. 2024 sees the 20th anniversary of this international trio that features pianist Gwilym Simcock and drummer/percussionist Asaf Sirkis.

Garland’s association with the prodigiously talented and much-praised Simcock goes back a long way. Both share a broadly similar musical approach that’s informed by a blend of fusion, folk, and classical forms, while the formidable Sirkis, a drummer and percussionist with a well-deserved reputation as one of the best in the business, seems at home in any environment, but here masterfully employs a bespoke kit of middle eastern frame drums perfect for the setting.

The trio’s three albums (If the Sea Replied, Libra and Lighthouse) capture their stunning agility and lyrical sensibility, with both Garland, whose seventeen year association with Chick Corea made his name widespread, and the now-world-renowned Simcock (Pat Metheny Band) sharing compositional input.

From lunch or coffee, pre-show dinner for two…or just because! Reserve a table now and enjoy a delicious locally sourced menu that will go down a treat with friends and family.
