NEW DOCUMENTARY
RHOD GILBERT: A PAIN IN THE NECK

In June 2022, Rhod was diagnosed with head and neck cancer, caused by a virus known as HPV.

This intimate, inspiring and, yes, humorous documentary follows him through 18 months of hope and hell as he confronts his illness. It powerfully captures the raw reality of living with a little-known cancer, shedding light on the challenges and raising awareness of the condition.

Rhod shares his daunting journey from diagnosis, through initial surgery, to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, with remarkable openness. Through intimate video diaries, we accompany him on all the ups and downs, share in the triumphant moment he rings the end-of-treatment bell, and then the agonising wait to find out if his treatment has worked as he tries to pull his life back together.

On top of everything he's dealing with, Rhod undertakes a personal challenge, not only to raise awareness of his condition and how it can be prevented in the future, but also to raise funds for the cancer hospital that played a pivotal role in saving his life.

This was an epic night 2013 I think. I hosted and and Suzy Izzard popped in to try out material. This was a late show. was closing. After ripping it up for ten minutes he then told the audience he could do impressions of comedians. First he said he could do Lee Evans. He walks off stage and comes back on doing his perfect Lee Evans. He then said he could do Rhod Gilbert. He walks off stage and Rhod came on. The crowd went bananas. Rhod smashed ten minutes of new material, leaves the stage and Terry came back on. He said something like “I’m still working on that impression” he then said he could do Eddie Izzard. The crowd reaction was amazing. They couldn’t believe what might happen… and it did happen. Eddie came on and stormed it. Fair play to Terry. He came on at the end and rocked another 5 minutes. This is one of those nights that confirms to me that you can’t beat live comedy. This would never have worked on tv. It would have sucked if it wasn’t thought up in the moment and three brilliant comedians being up for some mischief. It was a pleasure to witness and play my small part in it. Wrapping up the show and seeing the faces of the audience who were all buzzing. They had been part of something really cool and special. I knew my face reflected theirs. I’m glad Terry found this photo again. Viva Live Comedy!

Following on from our little teaser yesterday here’s a pic of the man himself who will be joining us to perform at our tiny comedy gigs on 25 and 26 July , previewing his brand new show.

We are hugely excited about this and honoured that he’s previewing with us.

Rhod has been a long-standing friend of Pop-Up Comedy. He did shows for us back in 2019, and supported us throughout lockdown with hilarious monthly appearances on our Zoom game shows (who remembers “What’s in the Box Rhod?” 😂).

No surprise that the shows sold out in 2 minutes. We hope you’ve been lucky enough to get one of only 300 available tickets, and we are so sorry if you’ve missed out this time (and had frustrating web experiences, while we broke the internet 😬).
