গগন তলে আগুন জলে '
সত্তেন্দ্রনাথ দত্তের এই কবিতা আমাদের সবারই জানা। পালকি আমাদের বাংলার একটি সু-প্রাচীন ঐতিহ্য, প্রাচীন বাংলার রাজা মহাসয় জমিদার সওদাগর সকলেই চলাচলের জন্য ঘোড়া অথবা পালকি ব্যবহার করতেন, মুঘল আমলের নারীরা বাহন হিসেবে পালকিকে ই প্রাধান্য দিতেন। পালকি কখন আবিষ্কার হয়েছে তা বলা কঠিন মতো মিসরিয় ও রোমান সভ্যতার শিলালিপিতে পালকির প্রমাণ পাওয়া যায়, এ থেকে ধারণা করা যায় যে পালকির ব্যবহার অনেক কাল আগের, আমাদের অতীতের সব লেখকেরা তাদের লেখায় পালকির কথা বলেছেন, বিখ্যত পারস্য পরিব্রাজক ইবনে বতুতার লেখায়ও পালকির আলোচনা দেখা যায়। পালকির শেষ ব্যবহারের চিত্র ছিল বিয়েতে, আজ থেকে ২০ বছর আগেও গ্রাম বাংলায় বিয়ে বাড়িতে পালকি দেখা যেত। তখন বর ঘোরায় আর কনে পালকি তে চরে তাদের নতুন জীবনের যাত্রা শুরু করত। পালকি আজ আমাদের কাছে একটি নাম মাত্র অথচ এক সময় প্রতিটি কুমারি মেয়ের দুচোখ জুরে পালকিতে চরার সপ্ন থাকত।
