"The transition from being a live-in Residence Don at my university to my post-graduation experience for the past 2 years was an interesting one. The stark contrast between living on a busy campus in close proximity to so many of my friends, in a role that required constant relationship-building, and the subsequent experience of working from home during a pandemic was a difficult adjustment.

I always knew that I enjoyed the presence of other people but this post-grad experience provided me with additional appreciation of the value of social interaction. It’s more than merely having a fun night out. It opens you up to new perspectives, gives opportunities for mutual support during tough times, and accelerates your growth as a human being.

I realize now that from infancy to adolescence we are spoon-fed opportunities for connection. Socially, one might say we are playing the game on ‘Easy Mode’ for the first few phases of our lives. As an adult, it’s much more difficult, but this challenge just makes it all the more rewarding. I’m excited to see our generation of young adults face the challenge head-on and find some creative solutions!"

New research from Chargifi finds that 67% of young workers have found it harder to make friends and maintain relationships with colleagues since working from home.

"Some of my most memorable experiences were with people completely outside my social circles.

In Odessa, a vibrant seaport in the south of Ukraine, I nabbed one of a dozen or so top bunks at the Babushka Grand Hostel. My mission was to discover what earned this city its moniker as "Pearl of the Black Sea".

I was however, entirely alone--I didn't know anyone within 500 kms. I took a deep breath, and asked the guy in the lower bunk if he would go to a concert with me at the Odessa Philharmonic that night.

We went on to explore a castle, the caves, and the local cuisine around Odessa together. An older woman, who drew beautiful sketches of the architecture and landscape from pictures she took along the way, joined our unlikely cohort.

We looked nothing alike, held opposing political beliefs, and came from very different backgrounds--not the recipe you'd expect for one of your most joyful memories.

There's value in bringing people together, especially those who otherwise wouldn't ever meet because invisible hands keep them apart."

"I didn't realize what a unique social experience school was until I graduated. Where else can you find a bunch of people around your age with similar interests and shared experiences? I didn't have a job lined up at first so I ended up with a lot of free time. I wanted to finally get to know people in my neighbourhood, so I joined some groups on social media and constantly checked various event platforms. I came to know that there was a lot of events for young children and older adults, but nothing for young adults. I had to browse a ton and what little I found was nowhere near my small town of Aurora. That was my inspiration for cofounding HumeOne, a social platform for hyper-local gatherings that makes it easy to meet new people."
