"So what do we do when things fall apart? And how do we recover from grief? Will we ever recover? I don’t know. I hope we do, but I have no idea how long it will take. But I think it starts with crying.

We need to cry. And then we need to cry some more, calling out ancient words of grief from The Book of Lamentations, classically read on the observance of Tisha B’av: “Eicha!” Alas! Or the words from Ecclesiastes, “Hevel Hevalim: All is futile!” As we cry, we will tell stories of remembrance – to re-encounter the traumatic experience and to lift up the memories of lives lost. We will sing songs, or find poetry, or art, or movement, or silence – to express our heart’s inner longings, our grief. Just as we return each year to days of sorrow such as Tisha B’av, we will always carry our grief with us. But in time it will transform."

Excerpts from Rabbi G's 2021 piece in Lilith to mark this year's observance of Tisha B'av, shared again today.

If sorrow finds you today, may you find peace and, perhaps, a good cry.

Ever wondered where we got the term "tie the knot?" Its origins are in the Celtic ritual of handfasting.

To honor the Irish identity of this beautiful bride Carolyn, Z & C added a handfasting to their ceremony. Carolyn's aunt made the special cord and shared these words as her brother and his girlfriend helped wrap their hands together:

"These are the hands of your best friend, young and strong and full of love for you, that are holding yours on your wedding day, as you promise to love each other today, tomorrow, and forever. These are the hands that will work alongside yours, as together you build your future. These are the hands that will passionately love you and cherish you through the years, and with the slightest touch, will comfort you like no other. These are the hands that will hold you when fear or grief fills your mind. These are the hands that will countless times wipe the tears from your eyes; tears of sorrow, and tears of joy. These are the hands that will tenderly hold your children. These are the hands that will help you to hold your family as one. These are the hands that will give you strength when you need it. And these are the hands that even when wrinkled and aged, will still be reaching for yours, still giving you the same unspoken tenderness with just a touch."

Mazel tov C & Z!

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields.

Your ketubah honors your unique partnership — the places you and your partner come from, your history and experience, your individual and shared stories. 🥰
A beautiful way to commemorate that is by including your respective languages in your Ketubah! Whether having two full texts side-by-side, or weaving passages from each of your spoken languages throughout your ketubah, this is a wonderful way to knit your lives together on your wedding day. 💕

So, your friends asked you to officiate their wedding...congratulations! What an incredible honor! And maybe a little nerve-wracking (don't worry, totally normal.)

Here are four top tips from Rabbi G and MJC!

1. They chose you for a reason. Prepare in advance. Print everything out and put it in a binder. Don't officiate from your phone (seriously, the glow shows up in photos and also, what if you forget to charge it?)

2. The ceremony is about their love story. Focus on pivotal moments - like when they realized they wanted to spend their life together. You can share how you know them - but focus on them as a couple, not on yourself.

3. Ask for a lavalier wireless clip-on mic. Microphone stands do not look cute in wedding photos.

4. Encourage them to get premarital counseling! It's a great idea for every couple.

(And if you want even more official officiant training, MJC has you covered!)

Dr. Gottman isn’t just saying something lovely, he has the data to back it up! 🧑‍🏫

Dr. Gottman and Dr. Carrère conducted a fascinating study, “Predicting Divorce among Newlyweds from the First Three Minutes of a Marital Conflict Discussion” in 1999 and John Gottman neatly summarized their findings in this very wise quote. It took them six years to perform that study! 😮‍💨

Part of their discoveries? Of the 17 couples they observed that did later divorce, all of them initiated conflict with expressions of noticeably greater amounts of negative emotions, such as disgust and contempt, and fewer positive emotions, like humor and validation, than couples who remained together.

Shavuot is a DAIRY special holiday. 🐄

It is customary to eat dairy on Shavuot - the festival that celebrates the revelation of Torah at Mount Sinai. Why?

1. Some say we eat dairy to symbolize the “land flowing with milk and honey” (myjewishlearning.com)

2. Kabbalists [mystic] equate the numerical value of the word halav, milk in Hebrew, with the number 40 (‘het’=8, ‘lamed’=30, ‘vet’=2) which is the the number of days Moses spent on Mount Sinai receiving the 10 Commandments. (myjewishlearning.com)

3. Others teach that that after the Torah was given, the Israelites were obligated to follow its dietary practice. So they ate dairy until they could figure out how to find turkey bacon in the desert. (myjewishlearning.com)

4. At MJC, we follow this cheesy teaching: it was simply a spelling error. After so many exhausting years wandering in the desert, they thought the next part of their journey involved wandering in the DESSERT.

What’s your favorite Shavuot treat…plant-milk- or dairy-based?

Today, take a moment with your partner.

Take a breath, maybe even hold their hand.

Turn to one another and share three of the many reasons you want to marry each other.

(While this is a great reminder during stressful wedding planning, this is a wonderful thing for partners to do regardless of nuptial plans. 😉)

What does counting the Omer mean?

In the days between Passover and Shavuot, the holidays marking escaping Egypt and arriving at Mt. Sinai, we count the Omer. Counting the Omer (the seven weeks between these holidays) is a spiritual activity, asking us each day to climb one step further towards a better world, stronger relationships, and personal well-being.

Each day we move a bit closer towards hope, a bit closer towards joy, and, we pray, a bit closer towards peace.

Talking about s*x and intimacy is crucial to healthy relationships. Especially if it feels a little vulnerable! Beginning the conversation may feel daunting, but perhaps this is a good place to start. 🌻

Led by Rabbi Rachael Pass, join other beloveds for communal and private conversations to explore topics of s*xual ethic, consent, shame, love languages, and even attitudes and assumptions from childhood. The session will be a mix of group conversation and chances to connect with your partner/s. But don't worry! You will not be required to share anything personal in group conversation. ☺️

We will conclude with drafting our own s*xual ethics and looking at the values we bring into s*xual and intimate encounters.

Join Rabbi Pass on May 19th! RSVP here -->https://tinyurl.com/drhwsktz

When we get married, we experience so much abundance - from the love of our partner, to the presence and presents bestowed on us by family and friends, not to mention the abundant costs of creating a wedding celebration.

So how can you share your abundance with the world?

Tzedakah - in Hebrew - means charity. It can be big and small ways that we offer support to causes and communities in need.

Consider these ideas:
Select a charity you want to support and put it your wedding registry.

Make a donation to a food pantry and let your guests know that while you're enjoying a delicious celebratory meal, you are helping those with food insecurity meet their basic needs.

Instead of giving out a wedding favor at the end of the night, figure out what you would'v spent and donate that money to a meaningful charity that you both care about.

Should you give to Jewish or secular causes? Why not both!

Congratulations to Rahul and Shosh - not only on their stunning wedding and New York Times write up - but on their love and commitment to one another. 💕

Rabbi G was grateful enough to support Rahul and Shosh throughout their Hindu-Jewish nuptials— from wedding workshops to our Boston couples cohort to their ceremony. They created a beautiful celebration that honored their families, heritages, and even the fruits of Tu Bishvat in preparation for their life together.

Just…wow! What a wonderful wedding and an amazing couple🥳🎉🥰

Years later, when you look back, what do you want to think of?

The flowers that arrived late, the wrong napkin colors, or the undercooked salmon?

Or is it the family who gathered, the loved ones you remembered, the celebration of a life together, and the love you share?

(Realistically…maybe a little of both. After some time passes maybe those wilted flowers will be a fond memory, too. ☺️)
