I've been working on some upcycled items! I am excited to do a lot more. Ultimately, I'd like to get away from using new blanks so much and pivot to mostly pre-owned pieces.

More experimenting!

I found this microwave pasta cooker at target for $3.

I froze about an inch of water in the bottom, added dye, put more ice on top of that, then soda ash. Finally, I put a messily scrunched apron on top. I used rubber bands to hold the top on then flipped the whole thing upside down and put it on a rack in the sink.

Fingers crossed for something cool!! I'll share results ASAP.

Show some support for my favorite local bookstore!

2022 - $117,149.57
2023 - $121,486.40
2024 - $109,706.62

When we moved last year I based our finances on the assumption things would at least hold steady from 2023 sales.

Hoping that conservative estimate would be blown out of the water when we added an additional 400sq ft of sales floor and event space!

Unfortunately as you can see, that has not been the case. We are down almost 10% from this same point last year. On top of that our base expenses are up around 30% over last year between increased rent and inflation.

(Oh and those damn cute shop cats who keep making me take them to the vet)

When I opened in Feb 2020 I was privileged to have a spouse who was willing to cover our living expenses and provide those little things like health insurance so I could focus on reinvesting back into Bettie's Pages.

That's changing.

My personal life is about to make a seismic shift as I find myself needing to make a go of things solo. And as it stands, Bettie's can't support that in its current form.

So what does that mean for the store?

I don't know yet.

The news is still fresh to me and I have a lot to sort out personally as well. I'm committed to doing everything I can to remain open and providing this space for as long as people want it.

But that's where y'all come in. We are in the height of our slowest season. Back to school ... Ugh.

Traditionally August to October is very quiet around here. And this year, let's go ahead and change that trend. Independent stores across the country and across all industries are struggling right now.

These are the businesses that support the communities they reside in. Through taxes, support of teams and schools employing community members, and spending more of our money right back in our communities than big box stores.

But none of us can survive without y'all.

I don't want to do a closing sale. I don't want to see this space I put so much blood, sweat, and tears into going empty. If you don't want that either then you know what to do.

Trying a method I've never used before. It's called Low Water Immersion (LWI) and it is one way to get a shorter batch time.

You apply liquid dye, let it rest, then pour water heated to 120 degrees (mixed with soda ash) over the piece. Then cover it and let it batch anywhere from 2 hours to two days.

I'm excited to see the results!
