Break My Broken Heart Tanda

I spent a few hours trying to figure out the easiest way to post a video that was just an image of an album cover with the song playing. The idea was to combine what I do in the the Instagram story with the post. Exactly 30 seconds after I posted a Rihanna album cover with audio I got a message that said my video was blocked for copyright reasons. So much for that. I also had trouble with Instagram stories today, blarg. Well enjoy the music, lol.

SONG OF THE DAY: Pham (feat. Yung Fusion) - "Movements" - TANDA: S*x & Swagger (3 of 3) // If I was to rate how cool the singer sounds on this track on a 1-10 scale... I think I'd give him a solid 10. If this song had a face it'd be oozing cool out of every pore. Just go listen to the track 'cause I guarantee it's 💯 cool.

Also when I looked up the the instagram handle for the artist () I finally realized that Pham is just a clever way to spell the word 'Fam'. I guess you could say that made me feel like a... 'phucking' idiot.

Shortly afterward I read, while researching where the artist is from, I found the other way the band name is a play on words. The artist's real name is Dawid Phan Ngoc. So, the band name is also a riff on the artist's middle name. A seemingly simple band name is actually pretty 'phantastic'.

SONG OF THE DAY: Jez Dior - "Leather" - TANDA: S*x & Swagger (2 of 3) // There's an combination of explicit imagery & layered meaning in today's track by Jez Dior.

The lyrics start out as simply PG-13:
"She kiss my leather, and
I kiss her better than she ever had
She wears my leather, and
I think that I'm a go home with that
And I'll play with that and make it slow"

And near the end of the song this is line that cements it as a R-rated:
"I need a Bonnie, I am a Clyde
Need to put all this bu****it to the side
Pulling your panties aside"

But the line that interests me most is:
"Saturday through Sunday, Monday, yo
It's whips and dips and slips"

It's a seemingly innocuous lyric, but is curious if you watch the video. The video features the signer at a rodeo arena where riders are practicing riding bucking broncos. "It's whips and dips and slips" can refer to a edgy relationship OR riding a bucking horse. Which made we go back and search all of the lyrics for double meanings.

I found another double meaning:

"I think that she love the way that I watch her climb, up down that pole
And that's the way that she's getting dough
And that's the way that she's getting throwed"

Pole dancing involves stripping off clothes like leather is stripped from an animal. She makes her money by exposing her skin, like a ‘saddle bronc rider’ exposes his body to risks for money.

The song is about the tenuous relationship between thrill and danger, s*x and money, and animalistic desire for a woman from a prospective of the singer.

SONG OF THE DAY: G-Eazy (feat. Devon Baldwin) - " Let's Get Lost" - TANDA: S*x & Swagger (1 of 3) // People have said G-Eazy is responsible for gentrifying hip hop. He's been called both "White Drake" and "the James Dean of rap". Regardless of your feelings about him, he can craft a hella s*xy pop song.

SONG OF THE DAY: Glass Animals - "Black Mambo - Zodiac Remix" // This song has a strange story behind it. The original title for the song was "Crystal M**h". The chill British dudes who make up the band aren't drug addicts, so the band's drummer Joe Seaward explained how the title came about,

“Dave [Bayley, frontman] wrote it while he was watching Breaking Bad and, I dunno, it’s one of those things: it’s like having a child and calling it James for the first year of its life and then having to change its name to Frank. It’s really hard to do for us because its name was ‘Crystal M**h’ first and then, I mean, it was just what it was called. So we got used to it and lived with it and then we realised that we couldn’t call it that in the real world, because I don’t think people would’ve liked it. And also it didn’t really make much sense outside our very small bubble so, yeah! It ended up changing but we still call it ‘Crystal M**h’.”

I couldn't find much about the artist Zodiac, who did the remix. His real name is Jeremy Rose, he's Canadian and worked with The Weeknd. He doesn't seem to be on Instagram or have a web presence past 2013.

SONG OF THE DAY: Tove Lo - "Habits (Stay High) - Hippie Sabotage Remix" // Tove Lo made one of the prettiest sounding songs about casual heavy drug drug ever made. I misheard one of the lyrics till I just now read them. I thought she said:

“Staying in my [PAPER TENT] where the fun ain't got no end"

Staying in my "play pretend" is what she actually said, but I still prefer my version. ;)

Hippie Sabotage made this remix more dance friendly by only featuring a few lyrics from the chorus and repeating them. The original version of the song starts out by mentioning going to s*x clubs and throwing up in the bathtub. So, definitely a little heavier themes.

I'm going to feature 3 songs a day on a theme for 3 days.
The first tanda is:

SONG OF THE DAY: Ella Vos - "Cellophane" // We end the the list of songs about desire with another song from FKA Twigs, but this time it's a cover of the song by Ella Vos. The original song by FKA Twigs is a tour de force of emotion. It'd be a complicated one to dance to, but the cover takes a different sound and different angle emotionally. I would dance to any cover of FKA Twigs done this well. It's good, Ella good.

SONG OF THE DAY: Friends In Paris - "When Your Heart is a Stranger" // Friends in Paris is a collaboration between 2 artists. Funnily enough, neither of them live in Paris. Kris Buckle lives in London & Dave Newtron in Australia. Today's track came out in 2017 and it starts out with some keyboard that sounds directly transported from the Moon Safari album by the French band Air. Then the vocals come in and wow, just wow, that's some s*xy falsetto. How ever you play this song, play it loud, with the more bass the better.

SONG OF THE DAY: Sweater Beats (feat. Erin Marshall) - "Do It For Me" // A warm upbeat track with a clear beat easy to dance to, but theres also a lot of underlying rhythms going on beneath the main one that you can dance to as well.

Sweater Beats is a legend (obvs), but the singer is great too. Erin Marshall is a prolific songwriter, singer and DJ from Sydney, Australia, for the past 15 years. It took a surprising amount of digging to find she has new band she fronts that debuted in 2019. The band is called Marshes and the track M.I.A. is dope (especially the acoustic version). She has an upbeat Marian Hill vibe and I hope she drops a full length LP someday soon!

Also a shout out to my friend Kevin who put me on to this track!

SONG OF THE DAY: Josef Salvat - "Every Night" // From the baritone to the falsetto I love everything about this man's voice. Beautiful singing, beautiful lyrics, beautiful everything.

THE LYRICS
You know they all say
That you're much more than this best the face deserts
But they don't get you need
They don't tell you 'cause your dignity comes first
I've got to keep you coming home!
I got to be with you every night
Got to be with you every night
Got to be with you every night
Got to be with you every night
Insulation
The battle's been fought and it's been won
You have told me you don't know where you run.
But I don't care 'cause you come back for my love
I always keep you coming home!
I got to be with you every night
Got to be with you every night
Got to be with you every night
Got to be with you every night
Too many times,
Too many times I have waited in line
Waited in line,
Waited my turn, but not tonight!
Tonight breaks established rules
Just tell me we've been caught up in for too long tonight!
I got to be with you every night
Got to be with you every night
Got to be with you every night
Got to be with you every night
Got to love you, got to love you!

· Late '80s vibes
· Normcore

This track is phenomenal, put down whatever your doing and go listen to it. You might as well just listen to the whole album, Purple Evenings, that this song comes from, it's pure gold.

SONG OF THE DAY: Chiiild- "Count Me Out" //
The track is from their 2020 EP "Synthetic Soul". Atwood Magazine said, the track is, "FiiiRE". It is, and the EP is just as wonderful. It's such a cohesive work that it's best listened all in one sitting.

I looked up the lyrics because I couldn't make out all of them and ended up reading about the meaning of the song, which was pretty interesting. The Montreal artist said the song is, "a fantasy that life is just practice and somehow in the future, we can get a second shot at this." So the chorus of, "Don't count me out, 'cause I'll come back (Swingin, swingin)" makes sense.

Glass Animals cover of Lana Del Rey's "Young And Beautiful" is tremendously good. The lead singer of Glass Animals, Dave Bayley, holed up a a studio apartment in London during quarantine. During that time he did a series of convers during that time. I haven't listened to all the covers because only a couple made their way to Spotify as finished projects rather than just YouTube videos. I could easily listen to a whole album of Lana Del Rey covers by Dave.

The original song is probably slightly easier to dance tango to, but the cover is something new and not everyone's heard of it. Also, all Lana songs are slow so you have to vibe with that and generally play with dancing to the emotion in the vocals. That's really the most fun part dancing to her, she stays on beat but stretches out words and pitch so you can be creative at low velocity. There's not as much room really slow dancing in the alt tango scene, it's not really taught as part of the dance vocabulary, unlike in blues dancing. There's no style of tango called microtango, but there is microblues. Someday once quarantineland is over, a "alt microtango" class would be fun to have at the monthly EVO Tango nights me & my friend Chris Schafer were hosting at Tango Berretin. Ughhhhhh. I miss social dance so much.......... And I have zero idea of it'll be like a year or much more before people feel safe dancing again. There's no 6 feet separation possible in tango dancing. Someday.

Ookay's 'Thief" is a great, great, great song under the Future Bass subgenre of EDM music. After listening to it (on repeat obvs), you may find yourself creating a Reddit account just so you can post messages about seeking "Songs with chill saxophone drops". The sax solo is so epic it can't be explained, it just has to be heard. I attempted to make my insta story have that same vibe, it has a the video quality which I like to call HD VHS.

If you're jonesing for more epic sax breakdowns look up "Back At The Start (feat. K. Flay)". It has saxy times to warm your eardrums, and your and maybe even your heartdrums, if you have those. As always it's on the Spotify playlist, link in the bio.

Two Feet, AKA Zachary William Dess, came on to the scene in 2016 with a really unique sound. "I Feel Like I'm Drowning" is the quintessential song by the him. Recently, there have been seemingly endless bands trying to mimic the sound created by the Dess. Lucky for him, he always stands two feet above the crowd.

Mickey Valen's 'Chills' with vocals by Joey Myron. It's dark alt pop banger about...banging. The original came out in 2018, this new version is called 'Chills - Dark Version'. It's dark, bass heavy and features synths that occasionally sound like they're being cut with a chainsaw. Good stuff.

23/01/2021

Elliot Lee is a rising alt pop artist whose best song so far is 'Pink (freak)'. While other people say they're "feeling blue" when they're sad, Elliot instead "feels pink". Pink is about alienation and how personal expression and looking unique can cause jerks to single people out and make fun of you. It also is about revelling in and recontextualizing what it means to be a "freak".

The word freak always makes me think of a weird story. Years ago my friend and I were riding back to our house and came upon a particularly good free bin on the sidewalk. We grabbed a few things and there was a black plastic bag there so I put my stuff in it. We started riding again and were less than 5 minutes away from the house were going over a bridge that took us up over the train tracks. I car came blasting down the road and the passenger yelled loud enough out of the window that it surprised me. What he yelled was, "FREAK!!!" It really upset me then and somehow it has stayed in my mind 5 years past the event.

I guess the moral is, sticks and stones will break my bones but words will always hurt me?! Anyway, you should be proud of who you are and let your freak flag fly. Or let the inner dialog in your skull talk trash to you constantly like a foolio. Do whatevs you feel my dudes, whatever checks off your 2021 YOLO goals is fine by me.

P.S. You probably should wait till after you get the vaccine before YOLOing too hard. Also... speaking of 2021 goals I totally spent all day making posts and prepping posts for the next day. 🤪 Soon I'll follow through with my resolution to make posting less work for myself, I swear.

Glass Animals is one of the most interesting bands to come out in the last 10 years. Their first album ZABA is filled with a LOT of tango-danceable songs, but feels like a collection of singles. Their second album is my favorite, it's a concept album where it tells a story in the songs and the multiple videos. As the review for it by "Line of Best Fit" said, "Each listen reveals more, scrapes back another layer. You'll get more and feel more each time you hit play."

Dreamland, the album today's song Heat Waves comes from is another great album. My favorite song is definitely Tokyo Drifiting featuring Denzel Curry. He's one of the one versatile rappers out and he does not disappoint on that song. The other notable addition to Heat Waves was the remixing by Diplo. The original is good, but the Diplo remix is dope!

FLETCHER's 'Last Laugh' from the 'Promising Young Woman' is a gem of a song. The film it's featured in is about empowered revenge and the song definitely fits those themes. The soundtrack is full of music by great artists, so you should check it out. The instrumental cover of Toxic really stands out. The best way I can describe it is...it sounds like it was recorded by drunken musicians playing cellos for a psychological horror movie that takes place underwater. In a good way of course.

Alt Tango Song Of The Day is back for 2021. Last year was A LOT...so there was a point where I just needed a break from social media. While this year is going to be tough, there's a hope in the air. I dunno when social dancing will be a thing again. It could be years till people feel safe en masse to have something like a tango festival. Till then I will be posting alt tango songs and watching Alex Krebs and Andrew Oliver perform live tango music on zoom from the legendary Tango Berretin

The other thing that made me take a break from IG was I was spending hours to simply make a single post and 2 stories each day. I'm going to dial back the amount of time I spend making elaborate videos for the IG stories and writing giant bios about the artists in the posts. I will try to do bigger bios on artists periodically, but not everyday.

And finally, the song that made me decide to post again is a cover of the song Brain Stew by

It's a perfect cover. It changes enough to feel unique, but not so much that it feels weird. Also, it feels sonically both of the 90s era and of now. The original is obviously a classic, but I like the cover even better because,
A. It's danceable.
B. K.Flay is one of the most talented unique artists of her generation.

Also, happy election day. Hopefully every day will feel a little safer.

TRIP-HOP TANDA 3/3

I Monster's "Daydream in Blue" is the last trip-hop song of the bunch. It's far past the trip-hop golden age of the mid 90s. This track came out in 2001.

"The song, which samples heavily from a 1970 cover by the Gunter Kallmann Chorus of the Wallace Collection's 1968 "Daydream" (itself based on a melody from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake), adding incomprehensibly vocodered vocals and a bassline from Portishead's "Glory Box."

It's a brilliant piece of what I've heard described as "cut and paste music", and it's def wizard level cut and paste. It reminds me a lot of whom I featured earlier. I'm not 💯 sure it's technically trip hop but genres are fluid and it fits well in the set.

While it's not Thursday, I hope you enjoyed my trip-hop throwback set. I generally don't post any older stuff because a lot of it prior have already heard of, but i like making the occasional exception.

TRIP-HOP TANDA 2/3

Our second song is "Sour Times" by Portishead from their album Dummy. My favorite story about the album is:

"The album was not recorded digitally. They sampled music from other records, but they also recorded their own original music which were then recorded onto vinyl records before manipulating them on record decks to sample. In order to create a vintage sound [they] said that they distressed the vinyl records they had recorded by "putting them on the studio floor and walking across them and using them like skateboard", and they also recorded the sound through a broken amplifier." -

“Portishead may not have invented trip-hop, but they were among the first to popularize it. ... Before Portishead released their debut album, Dummy, in 1994, trip-hop's broad appeal wasn't apparent, but the record became an unexpected success in Britain, topping most year-end critics polls and earning the prestigious Mercury Music Prize; in America, it also became an underground hit, selling over 150,000 copies before the group toured the U.S." -

TRIP-HOP TANDA 1/3

"Teardrop" by Massive Attack is a downtempo classic from 1998. This whole set of (3) songs is great, and has been played A LOT at alt tango nights for many years. I end up playing mostly newer stuff as you would've guessed from my posts, but if I did play a trip-hop set it'd sound a lot like the songs I chose today.

Here’s a little info about Massive Attack:

As the genesis point of the trip-hop movement, Massive Attack originated the genre's hypnotic sound: a darkly sensual and cinematic fusion of hip-hop rhythms, soulful melodies, dub grooves, and choice samples. The group created some of the most influential and trend-setting sounds of their era, with the groundbreaking albums Protection (1994) and Mezzanine (1998) informing decades' worth of acclaimed artists including Portishead, Beth Orton, Radiohead, TV on the Radio, and Tricky, a Massive Attack alumnus.

DARK SONGS ABOUT LOVE 3/3
Beck is a musical genius and "Paper Tiger" is one his best songs. While the song is known as Beck's breakup album, I like to think of it as Beck's rebirth album. He'd made "Loser" & Odelay in the mid '90s, but it wasn't until Beck's Sea Change until he was really 'back'.

The swelling strings are definitely my favorite part of the song. I learned the strings (and the whole song) are a reference to the opening track of Serge Gainsborough's album L'histoire de Melody Nelson. You can hear the same set of strings, albeit not as loud as in "Paper Tiger".

It seems like a strangely slow song for social dance, but after hearing it DJ'd many times, it's surprisingly good for dancing. I look forward to DJing it again someday.

DARK SONGS ABOUT LOVE 2/3
Yael Naim's cover of "Toxic" is a masterful recontextualization of Britney Spear's 2003 pop hit. While the original had a playful naughty vibe of, "I'm Britney and I like bad boys, lol." Naim's version has a show lilting melancholy beauty. Something I never noticed until researching this song is it was put out in October of 2007, eight months after Britney's very public shaved head meltdown.

Naim's version makes me want to believe that rather than the "guy", the singer is addicted to is fame. Fame is definitely what crushed early 2000's America's Sweetheart. Luckily Britney has pulled a phoenix and rose to being a Vegas superstar.

Last but very much not least. Mick Jenkins put out what I consider a landmark rap album in 2014 called The Water [S]. My favorite song on the album by far is "Jazz". It's easily within my top 10 rap songs. Also...it samples Yael Naim's "Toxic" cover.
