Save The Date! July 9, 2022 The 50th Gay Washington Pageant! Tacoma, Wa!
Here is a brief history of "The Washington Pageant", as currently published on the Public Page for the event.
"The Miss Gay Washington title originated at DJ’s Tavern, formally know as the Sandbox in Tacoma and the Mr. Gay Washington title began at the Handlebar in Seattle. These two titles originally were awarded to the individual who received the most votes on the night of the contest. As popularity of the Miss Gay Washington contest grew, in 1976, it was decided to combine the two contests and make it one statewide pageant. The two bars gave the rights to the titles to the Imperial Sovereign Court of Tacoma, who now annually host the Mr. and Miss Gay Washington Pageant during the Daffodil Festival. In 1992, several contestant categories were added to the pageant to round out the competition. In 1993, a monumental change was made to the pageant with the addition of the Ms. Gay Washington title. The winners of the Mr., Miss & Ms. Gay Washington pageant represent the Imperial Sovereign Court of Tacoma and their respective cities at functions throughout the State of Washington. Our Washington’s serve as public relations ambassadors for the community and all of the Washington courts. At out-of-state functions, they promote Washington State and extend the hospitality for which the Gay Washington’s are known. Through all of this, they create the excitement of the Gay Washington title and pageant."
Past Gay Washington title holders have often gone on to do tremendous amounts of good work for their local communities. The Gay Washingtons are also eligible to be members of The Fraternal Order of Gay Washington's, aka FOGWA. As a serving Gay Washington these volunteers travel across the state to represent the LGBTQ+ Community, under the auspices of The Court of Tacoma. Most recently, prior to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the Mr Gay Washington 2019/2020 and the Miss Gay Washington 2019/2020 attended multiple Non-Profit events throughout the Pacific Northwest, including local Community Pride events.
We invite ONE and ALL to come Celebrate this Historic Event with us this Summer. July 9, 2022. 6:00 p.m. at The Eric G. Sandstrom VFW Hall in Tacoma, Wa.
