We all agree that regular exercise enhances both physical and mental health and overall well-being. One popular form of exercise is boxing.

A unique sport, boxing offers high-intensity interval training that anyone can do.

Clinton O’Hello, a trainer at Deagon Boxing Club (DBC) said the fighters don’t just learn how to box, they also learn about self-defence, which increases their self-confidence and self-esteem.

“Regardless whether male or female or whichever walk of life you come from, boxing is a good fit for many and it’s one that many families support as well,” Clinton said.

The boxing club, located at 45 Adams Street, engages trainers with extensive experience. These individuals volunteer their time and share their expertise with all who are willing to learn.

“They come for fitness and if they’re keen, they can also participate in competitions,” Clinton said.

On Saturday, 29 June, the Lonestar Tavern in Mermaid Waters is hosting Urban Warfare Boxing, a competition which is being attended by several fighters from DBC.

The competition is sponsored by Urban Warfare Boxing, Hammer Promotions, AFS - All Fighting Styles (the sanctioning body) and Crampton’s Boxing Academy.

“Local to Sandgate, Redcliffe, Northside region – our fighters have worked long and hard and are excited to do their best,” Clinton said.

The DBC fighters participating are Tom Capewell, Nick Chilts, Muhammed El Sabakji, Wil Heinemann, Jake Rushworth and Sebastian Pastoors.

Muhammed said boxing had helped him in many ways, including with his mental health. “It’s given me confidence, plus to just have fun and gain experience,” Muhammed said.

Nick said fighting in the event was exciting because of the cheers from the crowd, the unknown outcome and the sportsmanship.

“My family supports me because they see it’s good for my fitness, both physical and mental,” he said.

Sebastian added that boxing had helped him with endurance and focus, but most of all, respecting others.

“My family has mixed views about me getting punched in the face, but after assuring them of the safety for the fighters…they support me,” he said.
