This year has been a frustrating pest year with rabbits, deer, slugs, earwigs you name it and nothing pest control-wise working. However, what has survived the onslaught creates some interesting and beautiful bouquets! Still a fan of wormwood and love the honeywort this year!

Salvia is a plant with so much variety. There are annuals, perennials, shrubs, plants...there are blue, red, yellow, white and more! I have chosen purples and blues to grow at the moment. I can say that they came back strong this year with my salvia growing in one area to over five feet tall. Not only do they last long in vase, add some cool structure to a bouquet, and have a very distinct smell (which I really like), they are also amazing attractors to pollinators of the buzzing and butterfly varieties! Salvia is a win-win for everyone!

Nigella are one of those flower that I actually look to cut after it has bloomed. While the flowers are super cool, they do not last long in a vase or on the stem. The seedpods with their beautiful feathery leaves make for a unique bouquet addition and can be dried for a long lasting display. These are also a cool weather flower so I plant them as soon as I can see the soil in the late winter/early spring and watch them grow in the cold of early spring!

This flower is a beauty with a combo of rose and peony feel! They have amazing vase life and do attract pollinators as well if left in a garden. They are incredibly hard to grow by seed so many purchase plugs in the spring (as I did). The unfortunate thing is though native to the southern US, they do not like high humidity (like this summer). However, we have them as the star of some of our arrangements this week at the stand!

Sometimes we have to share the flowers! Two swallowtail caterpillars came in on some cuttings of fennel so now we are “fostering” them inside to make sure they make it to butterflies! In truth, these are one reason I grow fennel every year!
