One of our aeronautical sectional maps found its way into the hands of one of Wallowa’s most aspiring aviators. These little rewards are truly the Gems that have made all the trials and tribulations of Melincko’s Museum worth the effort. Thank you Jetson for being an inspiration and tonic for this old aviator🙏

Katharine Wright was awarded The Legion of Honor award by France for her contribucontributions to Aviation. The Wright Brothers abandoned their first airplane in 1901 in the sand and Post Master Tate’s wife made three sets of dresses for their daughters from the fabric on the discarded plane. They told the Postmaster’s wife that “man will not fly for 1,000 years (wrote in their diary 50), and that they were abandoning the airplane and becoming full time bicycle builders.” When they returned to Dayton on the train, Katharine put them back on track, and changed the course of history forever. Remember Katharine!

Let us remember Katharine Wright today. The forgotten sister in aviation that propelled us forward.

The Northrup Gamma that can be found in the Smithsonian next to Hughes H-1 racer was a record setting airplane. Jackie Cochran was no stranger to setting records as she holds the most distance, endurance, and speed records of any human alive. She even flew in the 1935 race between Sydney and Melbourne against the likes of Roscoe Turner. Lets honor her memory today and everyday. A Real Gal with Real Courage and Skill❤️❤️❤️

Thinking today of Jackie Cochran, First woman to break the Speed of Sound! Here she is in the fine company of Chuck Yeager, First Man to break the Speed of Sound. Jackie formed the Women Air Service Pilots WASPs during WWII to help ferry military aircraft to the front line. Her courage and flying skills should be honored and remembered.
