Canon Josiah Jesse Ransome Kuti (1855-1930) was the first Nigerian to release a music album. A Yoruba clergyman and composer, he recorded Yoruba hymns and released them, his first album was released between 1902 and 1906. He is also the grandfather of Fela Kuti, the Afrobeat pioneer.

Josiah Jesse Ransome-Kuti: Nigeria’s First Recording Artist

Josiah Jesse Ransome-Kuti, born on June 1, 1855, was the first Nigerian to record and release an album. A devoted Christian and music teacher, he translated English hymns into Yoruba and used music as a tool for evangelism.

In 1925, he recorded Yoruba hymns under Zonophone Records, making history as Nigeria’s first recorded artist. His impact was so profound that colonial authorities called him “The Singing Minister,” recognizing his role in spreading Christianity through music.

Beyond music, he was a respected clergyman, serving as a pastor and later becoming a canon at the Cathedral Church of Christ in Lagos. Notably, he was also the grandfather of Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
