As the temperatures drop in Florida, please be aware that manatees migrate into the springs to survive the cold.
Did you know that although manatees appear chubby, they are mostly muscle?
Because of this, they cannot survive water temperatures below 68 degrees.
With our springs pumping out water at 72 degrees year roundβ¦
This is truly their Safe Haven.
If you happen to be graced by the presence of these gentle giantsβ¦ π Enjoy their beauty using passive observation. π
General Rule of Thumb:
β’ Always Stay Afloat
β’Keep a good distance away from them.
Here are some Do-Nots: π

β’DO NOT disturb them.
βThis includes diving down beside them, touching them, hovering over them, etc.
β’As cute as they are, DO NOT touch!
βSome manatees do not want any interaction with humans. They make it very obvious too by shying away.
βOther manatees can be curious, and may approach you. Freeze and float. They wonβt harm you.
β’ DO NOT try to feed them (water OR food).
βManatees have very keen memory, just like their relative elephants.
Once they learn that they can depend on receiving food/water from a human at a specific location, they have been observed to change their natural course to find this same source of food/waterβwhich will not be consistent.
Let them be. π
Their lives depend on it.

When a calf is born, one of the first things the mom does is nudge the calf up towards the surface to teach them how to breathe. π₯Ί The mom and calf continue sharing breaths until the young manatee is ready to take a breath on their own timing.β£β£

This was so fun to make!! π I donβt make videos like these often, but I was prompted by a couple of other mermaids. π§πΌββοΈπ§π»ββοΈ I giggled to myself as I ran around gathering all of the things Iβd need for the video, setting up my background, and then props. βΊοΈ I felt like a little girl playing dress up, excited to record. When it came to it, I realized I would need Andrewβs help!
