With the right mindset, you're always winning!
Redefining 'success'
If we place in a comp it can be a time for great celebration, and yet often the feeling can all too quickly fade and be replaced by doubt or seeking the next win 🏆
If we define success as only the trophy or the placement we can all too often feel disappointment and invite in negative self talk, self criticism and feelings of disempowerment if we do not achieve it in the next comp.
We can also watch others place top 3 above us in a comp, and feel pangs of envy, even as we celebrate their achievement.
Envy is not asking others to not achieve, but instead shows our own longing to do the same. It is not an emotion we need to squash down and ignore for fear of being a 'bad person,'.
Envy can teach us a lot about our own needs, hopes and fears when it crops up.
So how can we redefine 'success' to avoid the potential pitfalls of placing, or not placing in comps? 🤔
Growth mindset can help immensely. (See a full article on Growth mindset here: https://westcoastswingwellness.com/2020/02/18/dancers-growth-mindset/)
A first step on this journey is to acknowledge the work we have all put in.
The journeys we have taken and the hard work, determination and consistency that took us to this point.
By acknowledging the journey and hard work we and others have taken, we can truly celebrate and learn from every comp we are in, regardless of where we place. Whilst still noticing our feelings and thought patterns surrounding a compettition. 🤯
What movement have you been practicing that now comes with ease?
Did you hit an accent or flourish in the music that not so long ago you'd not even have heard?
That's success.
Did you enjoy the compettition more than last time?
That's success.
Is there something you learnt from your own or others dancing that you'd like to develop or begin learning/ perfecting?
Fab! You've unlocked a new level of awareness.
Thats success too.
So when you next compete or watch others do so. We invite you to notice your thoughts and feelings surrounding it.
Perhaps harness curiosity and lean in to ask yourself, what does this tell me about my needs and how I can develop and grow?
