Once upon a group date 😆 I found myself navigating the complex dance of new and established relationship energy with a new partner. We had shared a few outings prior, but this marked our first adventure into a night out with my friends. Little did I know, this evening would bring about a realization about my own heartbreak, and it all boiled down to a simple oversight on my part.

You see, my new partner was refreshingly open to non-monogamy, but in the whirlwind of excitement, I forgot a fundamental step – setting clear terms. In my established five-year relationship, my established partner and I have learned to go with the flow without imposing too many restrictions. Over time, we seamlessly understood each other's boundaries, so reiteration became less necessary.

However, in the midst of my NRE and ERE confusion, my fluid approach to love collided with a crucial oversight: my own unspoken boundary. I value commitment and cherish a focus on our one-on-one relationship, especially in the presence of new acquaintances. This boundary became a bit blurred during that group date when my partner unexpectedly left with another woman.

In hindsight, it wasn't about blame; it was about a missed opportunity to communicate my values clearly. My new partner, being unfamiliar with the intricacies of our dynamic, understandably assumed a level of comfort that wasn't there. It led to a necessary, yet, heart-wrenching, reassessment of my boundaries.

The silver lining is that I realized that even in the realm of non-monogamous relationships, boundaries are paramount. They may require a bit more conscious articulation, especially in the midst of new experiences. My partner's confusion served as a compassionate reminder that clear communication, even about seemingly traditional values, is crucial for the harmony of any relationship, monogamous or not. After all, it's the blend of fluidity, compassion, and a commitment to understanding one another that truly defines the strength of any connection.
