For as long as I can remember, we’ve never had professional family photos done. I can’t even tell you the amount of times my mom has had cell phone photos printed of us because they were the only ones we had of our family. So for Christmas this year, I booked a studio & surprised my mom with family photos. It felt like a no-brained Christmas gift in the moment, but I think it was one of the best gifts I’ve ever given. These people mean so much to me.

For those of you who are beyond excited to visit/be with family over the next week: Soak it in, be present, and make the most of every moment. Be in awe & rejoice at how fortunate you are that you have a relatively healthy family dynamic.

For those of you who are dreading the idea of being in the same room as your family, breathe deep and know that you are loved. Don’t waiver from your core, and give yourself permisssion to take interaction in small doses.

Story time!!

Ohio (in typical fashion) decided to start getting dark at 5:30pm out of nowhere, which has made catching golden hour really difficult by the time everyone gets off work and whatnot. So alternatively, these two agreed to meet me at the crack of dawn to take photos when it was 20 DEGREES outside. 🥶 Alas, they NAILED their shoot & it has easily turned out to be one of my favorite sessions from this year. The moral of the story is: Great things can come from unideal conditions.

There’s a book I read awhile back that introduced me to the concept of a safe-space, which in this context is a place you go mentally when you feel disconnected from yourself or others. It’s a space where you feel no pressure to prove or hide anything, and you can just be present with your most authentic self. My space tends to change from time to time, but as of right now this has been it. This place, this person, and this memory reminds me WHO I am..and having photos of that is something I wouldn’t trade for anything.

For the longest time, I HATED black & white photos. I thought they were lifeless and boring. But as of late, I’ve really started to enjoy b&w photography. Something about stripping the color out of things gives the photo a whole new perspective and captures the emotion in a whole new way. At least for now, I’m into it. What’s your preference?
