Love conquers all…

We recently posted that we’re here to help and support any couple worried about the impact of covid on their wedding, regardless of whether you’re fully booked, partially booked, or just starting your planning. We’ve had a number of stressed couples get in touch and we’ve already helped put their minds at ease. We’ve spoken to venues, suppliers and registrars and put in place back up options - and we’ve done it all for free 🥳

It’s been a crazy year for us here at Just About Weddings. An incredible amount of clients, venues and suppliers, and a huge amount of preparation for the madness that will be 2022 - one of the busiest years ever for the UK’s wedding industry!

Strange Times….

Although these are very strange times we live in, and many couples have postponed their weddings numerous times already (including one of our own Directors), we are still very confident that 2022 weddings will be going ahead relatively unscathed. That said, we also know that there are many couples who are getting nervous again 🤞

Wow!!!

So this is Berwick Lodge, and it’s safe to say we’re absolutely enthralled by this fabulous wedding venue 💒

For those regular readers of our posts, you’ll know we don’t normally think that venues offering packages are often good value for money, but we simply can’t say that about Berwick. Here, the costs are all reasonable, the food is exceptional but not crazy prices, and accommodation is luxurious 💫

So if you’re looking for a stunning wedding venue in the Bristol region, or you’re happy for you and your guests to travel for a ‘destination wedding’ within the UK, we strongly suggest considering - beautiful, exclusive and genuine value for money 🥳

Live music or DJ?

More and more we’re talking with clients who can’t make up their minds as to whether to go for live music or a DJ. The problem most clients have when it comes to live music is that bands invariably only want to play a couple of 1 hour sets, with a short break in between. That’s not helpful when dinner finishes at 7.30pm and you want to party until midnight.

How do you make 2.5 hours of live band work, when you have 4 hours to play with?

As wedding planners that’s a tricky bit of advice to share with clients on a limited budget, not least because good bands cost around £1,500+ and getting them to potentially play longer can cost that again 😬

Thanks to great businesses like www.adamchandler.co.uk and others, having both DJ and live music together, to fill the full amount of time, is getting much more popular, and we love the combo. It makes for a great party, and although it’s a bit more expensive than just a band or just a DJ, we reckon it offers the best value, and you and your guests will LOVE it 🥳

Wedding stationery….

So do you do it yourself or do you get the professionals in?

Some people reckon the save a dates or invites set the tone for the wedding. Some see them as a must but an expense they could do without. So what are the pitfalls of diy-ing your wedding stationery?

As planners we often have our clients start out by telling us that they will diy the invites, but as we get nearer their date they come back to us, desperate to get a professional stationer to do it for them. Why? Because they tried and they just weren’t happy with the quality of what they produced - it simply didn’t ’set the tone’ 🙄

It used to be the case that wedding stationery was a fortune, which many still perceive it to be, leading them to try the diy thing. But it needn’t be crazy money anymore - great suppliers like or offer fabulous stationery at really cost effective pricing 💰

Of course, it can cost double if you buy all the bits from Hobbycraft, give it a try and then, in frustration, admit defeat and call in the professionals 😡

So what are you going to do???? 🤔

Final chance to enter…..

So we’re getting really close to drawing our next Free Wedding Winner!! There’s serious excitement building in the office. So if you haven’t as yet entered for free, don’t delay!

You need to book your first consultation for free professional wedding planning - it takes around 1.5h to 2h and is done on zoom with you and your partner. Once you’ve had the consultation, you’ll need to sign the contract to become a wedding planning client and then follow us on Insta and tag your bride tribe in on the original post (from 27th August).

That all needs to be done before 31st October in order to qualify for entry. All the weekend appointments are now taken, so dm us a time/date during the week that works for you both - evening slots are a 6.30pm or 7pm start - and we’ll get you in the diary. Include your email and mobile so we can set up the zooms please!

It’s a minefield out there, when you’re trying to select the right venue - and venues know it! That’s why they came up with the ‘all inclusive’ package deals. Venue hire, catering, drinks package, bar, DJ - all in. You don’t need to think and you don’t need to worry. Barring some flowers and a few minor extras, this is the easy way to sort your wedding - but is it best value?

And is it just an ‘identikit’ wedding?

As wedding planners, we have spoken with many venues that offer these packages, and what we’ve found in the main is that the venues aim to reproduce exactly the same wedding week after week. It suits them. It’s easy. And it’s profitable. For couples that want a straight forward, very lovely wedding, that’s easy to arrange, then it seems to make sense.

But if you’d like your wedding to be very special, with particular features and/or timings, or a more personal choice of music provider or caterer (and that’s often REALLY important) then all inclusive deals should be steered clear of.

And in terms of value, dry hire can actually offer even better value. Why? Well because you’re only paying for the venue space. That means you can select the caterer (see our previous posts about pitfalls with venue appointed caterers) according to your budget, and a DJ or band that suits your taste, and every other aspect of the day, all with your budget calculator to hand.

Ultimately, a dry hire venue might well take more work to plan your wedding, but in terms of its uniqueness and having EXACTLY what you want, there is no better option in our view.

How much 😬😬😬

That’s the standard reaction when our resourcing team get marquee quotes!

Anything from £6k upwards - sometimes even up to £15k or more 😳

Unless you’re who offer something utterly spectacular for the money, this seems like HUGE costs💰

BEWARE HIDDEN COSTS!!!!

Here’s a big warning to all you couples out there looking to book your wedding venue:

Read the t’s and c’s and check out ALL additional costs BEFORE falling in love and signing the contract 🧐

What’s prompted this post? Well, mentioning no names of clients or venue or caterer, it brought us great sadness and distress meeting a new couple, who told us that after signing up to a venue, they found that they were FORCED by the venue to use a particular caterer. On enquiry, that caterer then advised that the rough cost of a 3 course meal, with a roast chicken main course, would be around £50 per head!!!

For those of you who have no idea about catering costs, this is around £20 per head higher than you should be paying.

The venue also confirmed that they would be providing a drinks package but told the couple that this is something ’that can be worked out much nearer the time’. NO IT CAN’T!!! Drinks packages can be VERY expensive, particularly if you’re providing drinks for 100 people or more, and in order to budget properly, up front, you need to know the FULL cost from the venue BEFORE you decide the venue is right for you!!!

Why do some venues feel the need to behave this way??? We just don’t get it, and it’s just not fair.

So brides/grooms, have a budget planned BEFORE you look at the venues, and make certain that the FULL cost is understood BEFORE you commit…

Alternatively, why not let Just About Weddings find the perfect venue, at the perfect price, for you and we’ll gladly ‘be on your side’ throughout your planning journey 😃
