Research in focus 🔍
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a genetic disease that causes fluid-filled cysts to grow within the kidney, and they become larger over time and ultimately limit kidney function.
Currently available medications can slow progression, but a better understanding of how the disease develops could lead to more effective treatments and that is what PhD student Cristina Pinel Neparidze will investigate thanks to a Kidney Research UK PhD studentship grant.

Have you heard about out Kidney Voices for Research Facebook group?

It's a group of people all affected by kidney disease, either directly as a patient or indirectly as a parent or carer. We share opportunities to get involved in and influence research and to use your voice to impact our work. We also share snippets of the exciting research we are funding.

Some examples of opportunities we shared throughout 2022 include:
• Reviewing the design of research studies for researchers applying for funding
• Sharing your story in the press or on our website and social media channels to help raise awareness
• Completing surveys and sharing your experiences as part of funded research studies.

One of our members is Kathryn, pictured, who has taken part in several projects 👇

“I took part in reviewing the design of research study and was invited to speak directly with the researcher about my views. This gave me a sense of empowerment as I could see how this was benefiting the researcher. Nothing can compare to lived experience and I am grateful to Kidney Voices for allowing me to be part of this experience.”
