The equipment has changed but I'm still just a kid with a camera! 27 years ago I was in a High School film and broadcast class where we spent hours learning cinematography techniques and recorded just about every inch of the campus. It was fun to go back into a few different school buildings this month and relive those times once again.

Here is a behind-the-scenes look at a bit of 3D modeling. This is a new development in Portsmouth Va that I feature in a video back when they had just laid the asphalt. Last week I was happy to see 3 new homes go up very quickly.

The flight is planned in software that sets the point and distance for each individual image with an overlap. For this selected area we went with an altitude of 150ft, which resulted in over 600 images. Once these are all stitched together into an orthographical map the real magic happens. Since we have so much detailed data and views of each side we can piece together a 3D map to zoom in and virtually walk around. Each blue and green dot is a camera position during the flight and the ones leading into the distance are where I had to change out batteries multiple times.

Good morning in Virginia Beach for another commercial real estate photo session! Yesterday I couldn't fly due to restricted airspace and today I am flying under an authorization waiver from the FAA and in communication with the ORF tower.

Also, I heard reports last week that the haze we are seeing on the east coast is still from the wildfires in California. I am seeing a warm tint in the skies over here.

Today's challenge is to map a parking lot for inspection, in an area where drones cannot fly. This property is literally across the street from a military base in what is known as a "Zero Grid" restricted airspace. We aren't even allowed to take off and hover in these areas.

For this job, I set my intervalometer to take a picture every 4 seconds and simply walked the grid while hand holding the drone. The photography drones have an excellent gimble for the camera and works very well for stabilizing the images.

Now we can take these 300+ images and using the GPS geotag stitch them into an extremely detailed accurate map.

Orthomosaic Mapping and Orthophotos! More than just fun words to say, these highly detailed photos are extremely useful in construction planning, inspections, measurements, and many more applications! This sample is taken from a commercial real estate mapping session earlier this week. The bottom shows what you will expect to see in Google Maps vs the high level of detail in the Orthophotos. In this case, a small 4-acre lot-required over 160 images to create a very precise and updated map of the area which will also be useful in creating a 3d model.

Another beautiful day on the water at Whitehouse Cove Marina for this real estate property shoot! We also get a glimpse at the big brains over at NASA doing rocket scientist stuff!

For those curious or concerned, this flight was under FAA approval with a waiver to fly in restricted airspace, and I was in contact with the tower. Always flay safe when near an airport on in restricted airspace!
