In the 1830s, workers faced grueling schedules, often putting in an average of 70 hours a week. By 1890, although improvements had been made, manufacturing workers were still working around 60 hours weekly.

This push for change was fueled by union organizers advocating for an eight-hour workday and more days off, including the establishment of Labor Day as a holiday. Their efforts paid off, as evidenced by contemporary work patterns where the average manufacturing worker now enjoys a workweek of just over 40 hours and typically has a five-day workweek.

The evolution of Labor Day reflects the significant progress made in labor rights and the ongoing importance of advocating for fair working conditions.
