Have any of the male Ellis cousins had their DNA tested? There is a Ellis DNA project that might be helpful to us!

Sometimes when doing family history research, you come across news of a tragedy. Just found one in the Ellis family, living in Howard in Steuben County, NY. In 1894, father Levi Ellis died of typhoid fever at the age of 48. Two weeks later, his 22 year old son Charles Ellis died, also of typhoid fever. What a blow to the surviving wife/mother Huldah Dunham Ellis!
Charles' brother was our grandfather/great grandfather Carl Ellis.

Holly's son Brady Ellis Gleason is learning to speak German.
I wonder why?
I am sure it is not because his 3rd great grandfather William Henry Kohler (pictured below) was born in Germany in 1828.
When William was 20, he left Bremen, Germany for New York on the ship Edmond (1849). It took him until 1861 to find his wife Elizabeth Elliot Sly. They were married in Potter County, PA, near Coudersport.
How are we related to these folks, you ask?
They had a daughter Nettie Kohler, who married Fred Reniff.
Fred and Nettie had Frank Reniff.
Frank and Idell had Eunice Reniff.
Eunice married Robert Ellis, who founded this branch of the Ellis family we celebrate!
But I am sure that is not why Brady is studying German!

Doing a little family history research and came upon this example of creative problemsolving from a biography of a Coe cousin:
ADMIRAL JONAS HALSTEAD COE, born at Newark, N. J., Sept. 23, 1805, was of adventurous spirit and when a young man went to South America, settling permanently at Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he became a wealthy merchant and died Oct. 30, 1864. He was an active figure in the numerous political revolutions of that country and the resulting complications and wars with Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil, and attained the rank of admiral. Among his naval exploits it is related that during a sharp encounter his supply of cannon-balls became exhausted, whereupon he substituted Dutch cheeses with successful results so that his craft was enabled to escape from the enemy.

This picture is the Ellis family homestead located on Hungry Hollow Rd, off Big Creek Rd, between Hornell and Howard NY.
It was occupied by Carl and Alice, then Robert and Eunice, then Norman and Connie, and now Griffin and Sarah.
There have been a few changes over the years - the porch on the right was enclosed, the porch on the left removed.
There is no sign of the 3 large pine trees in the front yard that used to hold our swings and tree house.
Wonder who the folks on the front porch were?!?
Do you have any memories related to this house? Throw them in the comments below!

Found the obituary for our grandfather or greatgrandfather...
From the Canisteo Times of February 8, 1945.
Carl Ellis
The death of Carl Ellis, Big Creek, occurred in Mt Morris Sanitarium Thursday afternoon, February 1, aged 61. He had been a patient there from December 10. He was born in Cunningham Creek and lived there til he was 22, when he moved to Big Creek where he had a large farm. He had been a school director, a GLF director and a Farm Bureau committeeman. He is survived by his widow, 3 sons, Richard W. and Robert M. of the Big Creek Rd, and Capt. Albert T. Ellis with the Quartermaster's Trucking Corp in France, 3 grandchildren. The funeral was held at 2:30 Sunday from the home. Rev. Frederick Raymond officiated and burial was in Arkport cemetery.

My thoughts...Big Creek was a community, not just a road. Same with Cunningham Creek (near Canisteo).
Carl had tuberculosis, which was why he was in a sanitarium.
Wonder what 'school director' was, perhaps about the one-room schoolhouse up Big Creek Rd (occupied by the Wilbur Brasted family later).
'His widow' Georgia Alice AKA Alice, is not named.
Uncle Thurlow was in France in WWII.
The funeral was in the home.

Found another newspaper article about the Ellis family, of which you are a part.
The woman in the front is Huldah Ellis, our great or great, great grandmother.
The man on the right in the second row is Carl Ellis, our grandfather or great grandfather.
Carl and his mother lived at 172 Greeley Avenue, Hornell. Greeley Avenue is on the east side of Hornell, near Bryant Elementary School.
The headline reads 'Sunday Blaze on Eastside'.
The subtitle is 'Home of Carl Ellis Substantially Damaged by Fire Caused by Overheated Stove'.
The article goes on to say 'The second fire on the East side in the past week occurred yesterday morning about 10:00 o'clock when the home owned and occupied by the family of Carl Ellis was very badly damaged by smoke, fire, and water resulted from an overheated stove. The fire was first discovered by Mr. Ellis's mother, who occupied the upper part of the house and her cries quickly brought the others, who were downstairs in the rear part who had not noticed the flames or smoke. An alarm was rung in from box 61 at the corner of Blaine and East Avenue. and the fire department was soon on the scene under Chief Henderson. Considerable difficulty was experienced by the firemen getting their apparatus up the hill to the fire, owing to the glare of ice which covered the roads. They soon, however, had 2 streams of water playing on the flames and succeeded in confined the fire wholly to the upper front part of the house. The rest of the house was somewhat damaged by smoke and water. Nearly all of the furniture in the lower flat was saved, it having been moved out by neighbors but most of the contents of the upper rooms were entirely destroyed. The damage to both the building and contents is estimated about $1200. The fact that the fire was upon a hill some distance and visible at many points throughout the city it attracted a large crowd of people to the scene. "

My thoughts...before telephones, you had to run down the street to call the fire department!
Neighbors pulled out the furniture to save it!
$1200 was a lot of money back then!
People would come to the scene of a fire!

Just found a newspaper article about our grandfather/great-grandfather Carl Ellis. He's the guy on the left in this photo. When he was 50, he was involved in a fatal accident. He was going east on Big Creek Rd, Hornell driving a team of horses hitched to a corn binder. A wagon was trailing behind the binder and a horse was tied to the rear of the wagon. Quite a caravan!
The car following him pulled around him and hit head on another car. The Impact caused the approaching car to catch fire after It turned over, confining both occupants. Two men who happened by made frantic efforts to release the occupants. They first got the woman free, but had great difficuty in effecting the gentleman's release. When they managed to lift up one side of the car to haul the man free, it fell back again, pinning one of the man's arms against the ground. Again they raised the car in tlme to save him from burning to death. The woman died due to her injuries. Carl received only cuts and bruises. So says the Rochester Times-Union of 10/01/1931.
