A big thank you!

The story so far -

When The York Candle Company were very kindly asked by our Pop Up Pirates business partners Nelson Bakery if we wanted to rent out the Micklegate space with them, through Space Invaders, temporarily over the Christmas period, the initial plan proposed to us was that our business partners would use the reception building as a cake shop, and that we would use the forecourt to sell our handmade candles.

However, when we visited the space, we quickly saw the potential to do more than just sell our own crafts and to involve other makers, and to turn the outdoor space into an artisan market, to give other local traders a much needed opportunity to sell their arts and crafts face to face and safely in what had been a very difficult year for all of us. Our focus was to put the artists first and foremost, and with that in mind we made sure to keep their pitch costs very low for them, and risk free, covering the cost of our rent and bills only. We also took great care in selecting only makers of handmade products, to maintain the quality of the experience for customers.

And whilst we took it upon ourselves to get together local makers of all kinds, and to arrange some incredible street art to transform the market space, our partners continued with their very own vision to run a fab artisan bakery after transforming the indoor reception building, and we were blown away with what happened next.

The concept of our artisan street market immediately struck a chord within the local arts community as well as with York locals, and it very quickly became a vibrant, fun, safe space for artists and crafters to once again show their work to the public. As a result, so many of our traders had a wonderful experience in their short time there, and we grew a community of like minded artists from the ground up, who we are very proud to now call our friends too!

With all that has happened this past year we honestly could never have imagined that we would create such a thing, so we want to say an unbelievably huge thank you to everyone involved, as well as to everyone who came down to show some love for our brand new local artist collective.

A huge thank you also to Social Vision and to North Star Investment Management for the opportunity of renting this space, perfect for this purpose, at an affordable cost.

Going forwards -

With all the uncertainty now ahead, and with Christmas now behind us, we have taken the decision that it wouldn't be fair on our makers to continue with our artisan market at this location at this time. And so whilst the Pop Up Pirates market will no longer be held at Micklegate, we wish whomever rents the space after us the very best of luck with their endeavours, and hope they manage to create the kind of wonderful memories that we have had.

But this isn't a goodbye forever! We feel that what we achieved there, we can absolutely achieve again elsewhere in York and we're determined (when the time is right) to make this happen! The city needs this kind of fun, organically grown, handmade, quality artisan market, that places the needs of the artist and the community above profit, and we will be looking in the New Year for other locations around York to make this happen for our collective of makers once again.

So keep following this page, and above all else, if you want keep supporting your local indie makers, watch this space! ❤️🎨☺️👍

Not long to go now until we re-open, but until then we're continuing to showcase some of our local artist and maker friends to help you to and online over lockdown.

Please take a moment to read about Paula at One Abstract. She's been a regular at Pop Up Pirates since we opened and we absolutely love her beautiful abstract artwork. You'll be pleased to know that she will be back with us also in the run up to Christmas!

About Paula

"I have been painting for 26 years, and creating abstract paintings for almost 20 years. I produced acrylic and mixed media art on stretched canvases, canvas boards and paper. I like to experiment with various mediums such as charcoal, graphite, ink, enamel paint and textured. I love to create art using various brushes, sponges, cloth rags, lino rollers, scrapers, palette knives and my hands.

For the past year I have also developed an interest for Pyrography, probably stemmed from my love of trees and wood as a material in general . Inspired by my love for autumn and winter I mostly create log centrepieces with pine trees and always get quite busy making Christmas ones."

Some very exciting news! Pop Up Pirates street market and cake shop on Micklegate, York, will be returning after lockdown so you will soon be able to shop from many wonderful local artists and makers in a safe environment to help you to and for Christmas!

Meanwhile, we still want to help you to do this online, and to continue to help our local artists. So please take a moment to read the below post about local children's author Thom Craigen, who has previously been at our event promoting his brand new book, Ballistic Kids

About Thom

"Hi Everyone!

I’m Thom Craigen, father of two and the author of the rock ‘n’ roll children’s book, Kids, which I wrote to inspire young readers to become young musicians as well. Some of the best times in my life have been playing music with other people – from the garage bands of my youth to signing a recording deal and touring the world. I still play for fun, and it is a joy that I want every child to be able to experience.

I moved to York 22 years ago to run a design and publishing business with friends. My band got signed so I went off to chase rock ‘n’ roll stardom for a few years before settling back in York where I now live with my wife, two children, a grumpy cat and a very lively puppy! I am working on several new book titles and keep myself out of mischief making short videos and graphics for other independent authors to help them promote their work online.

Ballistic Kids is a fun and engaging story (for children aged 5+) with relatable characters of all shapes and sizes. The story is inspired by personal experiences and highlights how music can build confidence, perseverance and self-esteem in young people. I want children to see that lifelong friendships can form by playing music together and, no matter what you look like or where you come from, if you stick at it… then ANYONE can rock ‘n’ roll!

I launched the book in April and promoting it during the pandemic has been challenging to say the least. I only discovered Pop Up Pirates just before the second lockdown so I was really disappointed that I couldn’t be at more craft markets during November.

If you like the sound of my book, please take a look at my website www.ballistickids.com – have a listen to the free soundtrack, download some free children’s activity sheets and consider purchasing a copy of the book (with a free band poster art print) for your little rock stars…

(Pop Up Pirates tip - Join the mailing list for a 15% discount code!)

Thanks for reading!

Thom Craigen"

We're just over halfway through the lockdown now, and there's never a better time to and . Please remember the impact that this situation is having on local artists and makers, and take the time to read about today's spotlighted local maker, woodworker Colin at C.A.P Bespoke Designs and show your love by giving his page a like.

About Colin

I am originally a Keighley lad who moved to York in 2001 to study art & design at St. John's. I loved product design especially, however life took over and I ended up having a career in retail management. 19 years down the line and a beautiful wife(Vicky) and 2 amazing children (Harrison & Erin), I have rekindled my love for product and interior design. I also have a passion for sustainability and recycling and have found a way to merge the two by using wooden pallets as my main material. It is fantastic how you can take a discarded piece of timber and turn it into something beautiful.

I set up my own business during the first lockdown (whilst still working full time too). I build large items (chairs/love seats) then using the offcuts I craft tea light holders and rustic signs. I love working with customers and commissions as I find this collaboration produces some fantastic pieces.

I am offering a free delivery service of my products across York for orders over £15 through November.

You can contact me through my Facebook and Instagram accounts C.A.P Bespoke Designs and c.a.p_bespoke_designs.

After a short break, we're returning to share some more of our favourite independent local artists to help you to and over lockdown! Please take a moment to read about today's maker, Lucy Glombek Artist, to see what she has to offer, and if you want to support her and to make her day, please drop her page a like. 🎨❤️👍

About Lucy

Lucy Glombek Artist is a fluid artist based in York, and we were delighted to have with us on our very first weekend, which was also her very first time ever trading at an event.

About her makes: "I create abstract pour art paintings using acrylic paint and alcohol inks. I predominately choose to work on stretched canvas and paper but I also use cardboard and plywood. My pieces vary in scale as I enjoy experimenting with different shapes and sizes. When creating my pieces, the most time consuming process is picking and mixing colours. Once that step is completed it usually takes me a few minutes to complete a painting. For most of my paintings I use a standard pouring medium but I also work with epoxy art resin, glitter and silicone to create different textures and effects."

Today's independent business that we are showcasing to help you and over lockdown is Bob and Zelda of Gazelle crafts. We've been working with Bob and Zelda for a long time now, and we absolutely love their passion for creating recycled products that benefit your garden's wildlife. Please take a moment to read through what they are about, and if you're feeling kind, drop their page a like.

About Bob and Zelda

Gazelle Crafts a couple’s passion to bring wildlife to as many gardens as possible.

Bobs background is as an engineer having trained as a watch maker and then he did a degree in design and manufacturing of watches and clocks, he then moved into the medical industry in the field of sleep and ventilation. Zelda’s background is in childcare and later trained as a level 3 Forest School teacher. We have always been passionate about the countryside and in more recent years have become passionate about how to encourage wildlife into the garden.

We started using teapots to make bird feeders and constructing their bug hotels so that they would not only be functional but add an extra attractive dimension to the garden. These generated quite a bit of interest and we decided to start a business selling them, to encourage people to develop a more wildlife friendly garden.

Since 2016 our products have evolved, we create bird boxes and feeders from a range of crockery that are designed to favour the smaller birds and, in the case of feeders, reduce spillage which helps to minimise the risk of attracting rodents, and at least 90% of the crockery and glass wear they use comes from charity shops.

In the last couple of years we have started mounting copper kettles and pewter Teapots and coffee pots on Oak to create stunning nest boxes and bird feeders that weather up to make amazing garden features, each one has a coin relative to the age of the kettle/pewter pot to add an extra talking point to it as a feature.

Trading as Gazelle Crafts is our main income and with all the shows cancelling it has not been easy and that is why we developed our website, its full of information and you can purchase products from there. Also when the shows start again you will be able to see which ones we will be at.

We hope you will take a look at our website and follow us on Facebook to widen our audience and……..maybe even purchase some Christmas gifts from us.

For the mean time stay safe.

Bob and Zelda.

Every day over the lockdown period we're highlighting local artists and makers to help you to still and to from home. Please read a little bit about one such independent local artist, Sarah Anne Draws, detailed below. We're especially liking her gorgeous yet simplistic Christmas card designs. Drop her page a like if you want to show your support for independent makers. 👍🎨

About Sarah

Hello, I'm Sarah Anne and I create simple, honest + sustainable prints, illustrations + designs.

Since being very young I have always loved drawing and creating, making, exploring and learning. In 2016 a resolution to do a drawing a day, then two years living in Scandinavia, led me to create my own calm, natural illustrations and Sarah Anne Draws was born.

Sustainability, natural calm, simplicity and happiness are at the heart of what I do, I don’t think that we should create anything new without first thinking where it comes from, how it is made, and what might happen to it when it is no longer needed – for this reason all my work uses renewable or recyclable materials, sustainable inks or dyes, and local suppliers (within Yorkshire where possible).

We continue our showcase of local artists and crafters to help you and over lockdown with Dave of Woodwyrm. Please take a small moment of your time to read the below introduction and to see what Dave has to offer, and if you're feeling especially kind please like his page Woodwyrm and share this post.

About Dave

"Hi I’m Dave and I run my carving business, Woodwyrm here in York. I’ve been an avid wood carver for many years and turned my hobby into a business 3 years ago when I was made redundant.

I’m a professional modelmaker by trade with over 20 years’ experience building a variety of architectural models and took up carving as a contrast to the day job.

I carve a variety of items but love carving spoons! Having been introduced to spoon carving 10 years ago I became addicted to it, there’s something very rewarding about taking a freshly cut log and working it with an axe and a variety of knives to make a beautiful functional item.

I love tinkering in the workshop and coming up with new ideas, like my hanging Dragons. But I’m equally happy carving the humble tea spoon or historical replicas.

It’s great being part of York’s creative community and I really enjoy taking part in the various events and fairs that happen around the city.

You can follow my work on facebook and Instagram and purchase something unique from my etsy shop www.etsy.com/shop/WoodwyrmCarvings cheers!"

Share the love for indie makers! ❤️🎨

At this time, more than ever, it is so important to and to

So every day now during lockdown, we will be showcasing one of many local independent artists and makers, giving links for you to buy some fabulous handmade creations directly from them, and to help them out in these tough times ahead.

What are we asking of you? Just to take a small moment of your time to read through what they have to say, and to check out what they have to offer, and if you're feeling particularly kind and generous, please give the post a share to help them reach a wider audience.

Indie Makers - Online Marketplace - Thu 5th November 2020

We know that so many of you have made a serious commitment to and to in these tough times, which is difficult now with the situation we are all in, but fear not as the solution is at hand... !

Starting tomorrow, and over the next month, or however long the lockdown is, we will be giving you links to buy directly from many of the wonderful independent makers who have taken part in the Pop Up Pirates arts/craft street market this last month, as well as a bit more information about the artists themselves.

This will not cost them anything, we just want to show our appreciation for our fellow artists and crafters, who have dedicated so much of their own time and energy to our venture, and to hopefully help them through this tough month ahead with a little boost to their businesses where we can.

What are we asking from you? Just for you to take the time to look at what they're about, and at the fab creations they'll be offering, and if you're feeling really kind, why not also give their posts a share so that they can reach more people?

Watch this space!...

Pop Up Pirates are now handing back the helm to Space Invaders for this lockdown period ahead, but we just want to say a huuuuuuge thank you to all of our artists, crafters and customers who have shown us such overwhelming support in the last month.

In this short time, we've turned a derelict van hire building and its car parking space into a vibrant and exciting independent cake shop and daily arts/crafts street market... how is that even possible?

It was made possible because of all of your support, because such a community was seen as something so positive for York, and because of the tireless efforts of our many talented independent makers working together to make this happen ❤️

But don't worry! Though we're taking a rest here, we're fully intending to be back with a bang when everything goes back to normal and in the final run up to Christmas!

And until then, we'd ask you to kindly pop on over to the Pop Up Pirates page, drop us a like, and continue to show your love for the local indie arts community by supporting our free online marketplace that will be taking place over the next month, showcasing them and helping them through this tough time to come.👍

See you on the other side and

A quick note that Nelson Bakery at Pop Up Pirates will be closed today, but our arts and crafts street market will still be open all day from 10am to 5pm.

We've decided not to charge any of our artists and crafters for joining us over these next three days, as this will be a tough time ahead for all of us, and we want to do what we can to support each other going into the next month.

So come down and show your love for local independent makers too! ❤️

You can find us on Micklegate, York, just opposite BrewDog York!
