Jazz at Lincoln Center

On this day in 1957, Thelonious Monk assembled an all-star group of Ray Copeland, Gigi Gryce, Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, Wilbur Ware, and Art Blakey to record one of Thelonious’ greatest studio efforts: Monk's Music.

Monk’s Music (and, generally, Monk’s music) is a gift that keeps on giving, and first-time listeners are in for a treat. Just listen to Thelonious' excitement as he drops out at the end of his first solo to call up the next soloist: “Coltrane! Coltrane!”

Of course, with Thelonious Monk, it’s not just the music that’s unforgettable. How about that album cover!?

TAKE 5: West Coast Cool Jazz
Originally performed live on September 14, 2019

Dave Brubeck, Chet Baker, Paul Desmond, and Gerry Mulligan helped create the popular ‘cool jazz’ style that hailed from the West Coast. Lyrical, mellow, and always swinging, it helped define the musical soundscape of the 1950’s. The CJO takes on some of the great songs and arrangements from that era, while exploring new versions of some of its classics. So let’s put the top down on the convertible and take a ride along the Pacific Coast Highway!

Blue Note Records

Salute to one of the greats, Jymie Merritt has passed away at 93 years old. In the 1950s & 60s the wonderful bassist appeared on numerous Blue Note classics as a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers including "Moanin'," "The Big Beat" & "Mosaic." As a sideman Jymie anchored sessions led by Sonny Clark & Dizzy Reece, and was part of Lee Morgan's final group which recorded the expansive "Live at the Lighthouse" in 1970 featuring Jymie's tunes "Absolution" & "Nommo." Kevin Bales killing it last night at Wheel Sessions! King of 🎹 keys with great personality and show skills. We are so lucky to have heard him in Greenville. I think we can get him back. He had a blast himself with our seats packed and standing room only, intimate crowd. I found my socks out in parking lot, literally got blown off!!!! And, of course, epic Mike Holstein on bass and
Kevin Korschgen on drums.
