With Leeds currently being swept up in the excitement of the Ashes series, we thought now would be a fantastic time to give a mention to the team we sponsor, Nelson Cricket Club! 🏏

Studies show that only 50% of children and young people in the UK get their daily recommended amount of physical activity. With active young people reporting higher levels of mental and physical wellbeing, the importance of getting kids into sports couldn't be more clear. That's why we're over the moon to be supporting Nelson Cricket Club and their youth programmes. We've seen first-hand the incredible impact that Nelson CC has on young people in the local area.

Some of you may know that we are the proud sponsors of Nelson Cricket Club! 🏏 Today, we wanted to talk about one of the club's bold pioneers whose story inspires us: Learie Constantine.

Born in Trinidad in 1901, Learie Constantine was the first player to take a Test match wicket for the West Indies. In 1929, Constantine accepted an offer to play professionally at Nelson Cricket Club. Nelson CC went on to win the Lancashire League eight times during Constantine’s ten seasons there.

Despite Constantine's fame as a renowned cricketer, he encountered many struggles with racism in the UK. In August 1943, after playing a charity cricket match in London, Constantine and his family were refused entry to the Imperial Hotel because of the colour of their skin. Constantine took a brave stand, taking legal action against the hotel. It was a landmark case and a key step towards the creation of the Race Relations Act of 1965. In doing so, Constantine made history as both a sporting hero and a campaigner for racial equality.

Constantine continued to make incredible contributions to both sports and social justice throughout his life. In recognition, Constantine was awarded a peerage in the House of Lords in 1969, becoming the first-ever black Lord in the UK.

Through his courage and dedication, Constantine opened doors for others to follow his path. That’s why we’re celebrating him as one of history’s great !

Ahead of the 2023 cricket season, we are pleased to announce a three-year sponsorship deal with one of the founding members of the Lancashire Cricket League, Nelson Cricket Club!

We are looking forward to getting behind and supporting all of the Nelson CC teams in the coming seasons. We would like to invite everyone in the Barrowford and Nelson area to come down, support, and enjoy everything that this magnificent cricket club has to offer.
