Have you ever wondered what Uber drivers face on a daily basis? We all know that everyone is unique and different in their own ways, and we anticipate a diverse Uber clientele.

Tonight, I had that quick reminder of why I continue to strive to get my small business off the ground. So, I can build a clientele that value the service we provide.

Yes, I still drive for Uber because that’s what you do when you’re driven to bootstrap your business Ellis Transit LLC.

I'm on my way home after a distressing encounter with a highly intoxicated businessman. Despite holding him in high regard, he verbally assaulted me, vehemently expressing dissatisfaction with my pricing. His outbursts, more than seven times, included yelling and accusing me of taking advantage of him. He insisted that I never visit his house again and declared he would never recommend my services due to feeling "screwed over" by my charges. Throughout, this interaction his wife attempted to calm him down. Feeling the impact of his rage, I remained silent. Once they were dropped off, I drove away, parked, and found myself overwhelmed with emotion, shedding tears. This incident has shaken me deeply, and I haven't felt this emotionally affected since my mother's funeral 2 1/2 years ago.

Sometimes I feel as if I am just spiraling into life, lately. I catch myself wanting counsel from my father, him saying:

“Standing in one place, will not help you achieve getting you to your destination.”

“Folded arms and hands don’t inspire, it’s not about you;(points to my little brother and baby sister) It’s about them!”

“You have a voice use it, and if they can’t hear you talk louder!”

“If you want substantial change, you need a collective voice.”

On this Thanksgiving day, the absence of my parents is immensely felt, as the celebration has long been a cherished tradition for our family. In the seven years since my father's passing and three years since my mother's, I find myself in contemplation about almost anything else other than missing them.

Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance.

This day, November 20th, honors the lives of transgender and gender-diverse people tragically lost to violence and the countless members of the community who continue to face discrimination and violence every day.

We recognize that domestic violence and sexual violence disproportionately impact individuals of all genders. It is crucial for Indigenous advocates and communities to acknowledge that our LGBTQ2S+ relatives experience unique barriers in accessing help, resources, and support around IPV.

Our work to raise awareness of gender-based violence includes a commitment to honoring traditional Indigenous teachings that promote respect and safety for all identities. As relatives, we carry the responsibility to raise our voices against harmful actions toward our transgender community.
