The GCA will be consulting its membership on whether to close their doors again next week.

There have been representations to the committee stating that in the current climate of continued restrictions businesses are losing money by remaining open.

It is felt that the rules implemented are unfair as bars and restaurants have not been proven to be problematic places of transmission with the vast majority complying with strict hygiene procedures. The 3-7pm alcohol ban particularly has caused frustration among owners as has had a negative effect on trading as well as caused a significant amount of weekend booking cancellations where locals are preferring to go to Spain where virus numbers are significantly higher with far less people vaccinated.

The impact and losses caused by continuing restrictions far outweighs the 30% Beat and assistance package offered by government for March and this is before any kind of market analysis that would show tourism and consumer confidence is low. The reality is that losses are being incurred whilst Bars and Restaurants remain open.

The GCA will have no choice but to make representations to Government for increased assistance if we do not see a rapid de-escalation of the rules which hinder us to operate effectively and plunge businesses further into debt.

For Catering establishments the hard fight for survival begins now, trying to make a living whilst battling through a mountain of debt and footfall being lower than ever. It would be a shame for businesses to fail now when we can finally see a small light at the end of the tunnel.

Permits have been amended to state alcoholic drinks need to be removed by 3.30pm from tables.
This is yet another blow in what has been a very quiet first week of trading. Business are fighting for their lives right now.

The Association urges Civil contingencies and HM Government of Gibraltar to review this crippling 3-7 alcohol ban ASAP to save our businesses. This rule only pushes our clients into a lower vaccinated Spanish region.

The cases are at their lowest for some time and majority of our population vaccinated.

Please share this post to support your local bars and restaurants.

Many establishments fear that the current 3-7pm no alcohol policy, will push locals to enjoy long lunches in Spain making business even more difficult for local enterprises.
Mother’s Day is an important day in the hospitality diary and this too will be affected. We want to give mothers a special day, we hope the Government will review the 3-7pm alcohol ban for in time for us all to treat our mums to their relaxing mothers day lunch in their favourite venues.

03/03/2021

The 3-7pm alcohol curfew acts as a huge deterrent for bar and restaurant customers. It affects daytime, night time attendance and will affect weekend trade adversely during an already difficult low season for businesses. Venues work hard to keep to covid public safety regulations and measures implemented on business conditions should reflect this. We urge the Government to reconsider these unnecessary and unexpected restrictions as soon as possible.

Please share our post if you agree and want to help local businesses.

The Catering Association will be seeking clarification from Government this week on closing times for catering establishments for the first half of March. The membership have made representations to the GCA and are hopeful closing times will be aligned to the national curfew of 10pm meaning last orders will be at 9pm.

The GCA have also made contact with the Environmental Agency for clarification on rules in accordance with Civil Contingencies planning and will be informing members as soon as these are made public.
