Blessed to still be harvesting from the gardens! This warmer weather has so many flowers blooming outside of the hoophouses too. Natives for the win!

In other news, for the next few weeks we are slowing way down with intention and stepping away from electronics.

There is field work to finish up and 1000s of bulbs to still plant. A little more winterizing chores to do and 100s of seed trays to start. Preservation projects to reassemble. Fields to plan… courses and books to write…

But first, Jesus and family!

The next two weeks will be nothing but homemade meals, warm tea and hugs, bread and desserts, building and science projects, music, and lots and lots of books.

Then we will be back stronger and brighter than ever! Can’t wait to see everyone in the new year and share all of things we have with you.

Happy holidays, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I hope it’s a wonderful time with friends and family. I hope you are able to take some time for intentional mindfulness and self recovery. 🫶🏻🎄💐

- Love from all of us here at Fields for Ellie!

I take a pretty naturalistic approach to my gardens and farm. I’m not talking about our low chemical and low till methods, I mean I mimic nature as much as possible in how I operate the farm.
I have plans and to do lists, but the environment and the weather dictates what actually gets done in a day. This is true for most farmers actually. I may have x,y, and z to accomplish, but then it rains or an unexpected cold snap pops up and we pivot our priorities.

This year we’ve had extended warm weather and I’ve taken advantage of it to hold off on some usual fall chores.
Today I’m preparing the roses, fruit shrubs and vines for their winter sleep. There are many ways to that you can do this.
1. Some partially dig them up, lay them over and cover them with soil and other mulching materials.
2. Some prune them down and deep mulch.
3. some also cover with burlap, plastic, etc

I go about it a different way because my climate allows me to. I build little cages from chicken wire to circle around the plant and then I fill with leaves. Winter can get really harsh here, but all things considered, it’s a fraction of the time that others experience. I’m less worried about protecting against long periods of sub freezing temperatures and more worried about desiccation from cold winds and rot and diseases from cold, wet conditions.
So, by building these little cages with leaves I protect the plants from drying out from wind, keep snow and frost off of them, and provide some additional protection to the roots below by keeping back the elements from their immediate area while still allowing the plant to breath and take in water while controlling undesired effects of mulching and burying.

The English and Dutch roses are use to cold temps so I’ll wait a little longer before filling their cages. I’m mostly worried about those crazy temps in February and that one big snow that we almost inevitably get now.

Hopes this helps or inspires you to try new wintering methods. I’d also love to hear what you do! I’m always looking for new and better ways of doing things.

Good morning! Since we finished up planting out ranunculus and anemones last week, I wanted to share a video with you guys on how it’s done in case you decide to give it go yourselves.

This video is from last year, but the information is the same. The only thing I did differently this year was I didn’t pre-sprout my corms. This was for two reasons:
1. I had WAY more corms than last year. Like 1000s more.
2. I’m growing them in raised boxes inside of the hoophouses so that affords me the opportunity to skip this step. That saves me both time and energy with planting them twice. Once in trays then into the boxes.
Yall let me know if you have any questions. 😊

Ok yall. It’s that time of year. Out with the old and in with the new! 🧹🧼🧽
We are in the huge process of clearing and resetting the fields, hoophouses, and product lines. Next year’s flowers are already underway and everything else must go so we can continue to provide you with the best quality and customer service around! 💐🌱

I use this giant wooden bowl to collect the “trash” parts of my floral preservation projects as I work along. Then I dump it in the compost. It’s always hard too because look how pretty it is!
Point of this is…. There is still so much beauty in the unwanted!
Read that again and then apply everywhere you can! Often times we are pretty hard on ourselves and others too. It would work in those situations as well. What about reuse and repurpose over buying new? Whatever it may be…
Always look for the beauty!!

It’s my least favorite day of the year. I’ll just be honest. 🤭🤫 Every day until the rains hit, I’ll be digging up dahlias for winter storage. I planted in a new area in a new way this year and it was an epic failure. It happens. 🤷🏻‍♀️
We did manage beautiful blooms amongst the drought, but the w**d control was just not there as I hoped. It’s going to make this work work harder just like the drought and pest pressure from the grass made growing hard.
I also skipped a step in testing the soil before I planted here because I was strapped for time way back then.
Pro tip: your soil is your #1 most important thing! Never skip this step!!
Finger crossed 🤞🏻 that these girls will hold out long enough against these harsh temperatures for me to rescue them since the boys are unable to help this year. 🥶💪🏻

Ok y’all we need a little more help. After a long day of planting, we switched gears and packed 50 boxes full of Christmas presents for kids who lost everything during Hurricane Helene. 🤩🎄
We are short 25 stuffed animals for the boys and maybe it’s my mom heart, but the boxes just can’t be complete without knowing these sweet little children have something to hold on to after everything they have been through.
If you would like to help us make this happen, my Venmo is right down there 👇🏻👇🏻 Last four of my number is 5509.
These boxes leave out this week so anything you can manage will go a long way! Our goal is $300. I’ll delete this when we reach it.
Thanks so much!!!

It’s that time of year! Ranunculus, anemones, and freesia planting has begun. Today I have planted a minimum of 2,400 ranunculus corms! 😅 Even with my high intensity method of planting, I ran out of space in the hoophouse. 😮 Looks like the last 400+ ranunculus, 2,500 anemones, and 500 freesias will have to fill up a second house. 🤫 Don’t tell the tulips, but they may be sleeping outside this year.
Watching the sky change around me is pretty cool too. Thought I’d share some snapshots of it.

Go ahead, tell me this isn’t the prettiest, coolest thing you have ever seen!! 🤩🤩🤩
Today is all about filling in gaps and making sure it’s airtight. I’ll run landscape fabric around the outside as well as it is a part of my garden design in this area. I also am building a small lean to on the backside to stack all of the wood under so that I can keep it heated all winter.
I want to live in here!! 🤫 Don’t tell my family I said that. 🤭
Next up, building shelving units around three sides so we can start seed germination!!
