You just stand...
Last week I had the pleasure of being interviewed by @touchysubspod as a #survivor of abuse and sexual trauma.
And ironically last night coming back from an event I heard a song that I use to play often during my journey. It's from @donmac6453 called Stand. Here's a snippet from the song.
"Tell me, what do you give when you've given your all
And it seems like you can't make it through?
Tell me, how do you handle the guilt of your past?
Tell me, how do you deal with the shame?
And how can you smile while your heart has been broken
And filled with pain, filled with pain?
You just stand..."
I don't know who this is for but the reality is we are all surviving from something and trust me I FULLY understand the internal narrative that tells you to give up but beyond that narrative is unlimited possibility, peace and purpose.
You just stand...
If you want to hear more about my journey decades in the making, listen to the full interview linked in my bio. I'm rooting for you. Happy Wednesday!
End of year sweetness...
A few weeks ago I said to a trusted mentor of over a decade, "Can you believe my year is ending up like this? Can you believe this is my life?" She's said, "Well Melva you've never given up hope, never so yea I can believe this is your life..." In a year where we started with next to no events ended with...
28 events
5 films produced
Epic conclusion to Beyond the Blackout
Countless script and ghost writing projects
I did not do this alone. This year, correction my life is a result of prayer warriors like my mamma, granny and Dad who look on me from above. It's the loving support from my husband. It's that can't quit, won't quit relentless work ethic gifted to me by my ancestors. It's the result of countless loooong nights with the LaJoy team, a group that really loves eachother unapologetically and unconditionally and yes, it is most certainly hope in things unseen.
As a girl who use to do the most humbling jobs and survived trauma what I know to be true is that it's not how you start, it's how you finish and trust me, I'm just getting restarted.
Thank you 2021. Daddy, I miss you severly but I'm gonna be alright. Grateful.

I am very late in posting this but the message was too important for a rushed post...
First I want to thank @renaromano for the forum of hope she's built for #survivors like myself and so many others. I reccomend you follow her and listen to her podcast. You can hear our discussion in my bio.
Second, as I close my first week ever #workingfromparis I am in awe. My view has expanded and while this week was challenging with five events on East Coast time and @iamsam_22 had to talk me through some things, I am in the midst of a thriving season...
So in my humble opinion, trauma is not the end of the story, it's a story that requires healing, community, and so much more but it does not get to decide your destiny. Period.
And as Paris sits as my backdrop this I know to be true. Blessings everyone. Have a great weekend!
What I know for sure is that every story has a purpose...
I am excited to announce that LaJoy Plans is diving fully into storytelling. I've been honored to publicly speak about the industry and living beyond trauma but now I am more actively seeking clients who want their stories told in ways that inspire. I've been writing since the age of 7 and in this season I've been behind the scenes, ghost writing and telling stories for all types of people and organizations. I've learned how to write in another person's voice authentically and I'm loving it.
To celebrate this work, @jennyrosecreative refreshed the website so take a look. We are event experts. We are storytellers. We are rooted in joy. New chapter loading. Happy Tuesday!
Seventeen days until my birthday and what I know is that I'm not the same...
In life I am proud to be Emmanuel’s wife...
In work, I've expanded the team, delved into new and different projects and welcome new clients thankfully...
I am blessed but if I'm being honest part of not being the same is that I've been tested. I've been humbled and I've been way out of my comfort zone. My body and heart have ached more than once.I lost my Dad, I have a dear friend who lost someone to suicide because the weight of this new world was too much, I've seen people get divorced and then there's COVID. Yes, it is alot...
So here's your weekly reminder that before you work on that proposal, cross the next thing off your list, try this on. Check on at least one person daily without an agenda, no seriously be genuinely interested. Ask How are you? and wait for the person on the other end to fill the room with their truth and most importantly, keep tabs on your inner self. Vulnerability I think is a gift and our humanity, our collective humanity I have found can lighten the load during this time.
So that's my hope virtual fam. Sprinkle joy in someone's week. If and when you have a free second, listen to my keynote address with industry advice but first...Humanity. Happy Monday!

I read something this morning that said "Llife's work demands nothing but your intent and passion for that work..."
My intent through BTB3 was to connect with others and along the way I heard amazing business beginning stories which is why I became a bit obsessed about ending the event series with a film aptly titled " The Story of Beyond the Blackout." Storytelling has become a passion of mine.
Thank you to my co-producers for allowing me to write it, @carolynmalachi for adding your beautiful voice, @besongetchi for capturing all the footage, my creative colleague Andre for masterfully editing/producing this entire piece, and for @eventsatandersonhouse allowing us to film over multiple days where our story began.
DC Event pros, This is Us. I hope you enjoy our story linked in my bio and if you watched at the event tell me your favorite moment. Blessings to us all. Happy Thursday.

Weekend energy...
Do me a favor grab your ticket to BTB3 going down in just 11 days on Tuesday, August 17 @conradwashingtondc . We have food, spirits, photo booth and of course #creativepreneurs and community. Will I see you there? I hope so. TGIF.

Last week I was talking to a fellow event colleague whose seeing her professional circle shift in unexpected and slightly uncomfortable ways. I encouraged her to view every interaction in business and in life as a gift, a chance to learn some new, and to gain a different perspective.
Here's what I believe to be true. Everyone who is in your life may not stay but their impact is an important part of your internal tapestry. Every person no matter the duration in your life or business is a gift.
So for anyone who is living through a shift in your circle, do not fear because you are growing and you've got a life that is waiting for you. I'm rooting for us all.. Happy Tuesday!

Last night I watched the amazingly talented Sarah Khan Event Styling not win #fullbloom on HBO Max surrounded by family, loved ones, and friends including a fellow cast member.
Sarah watched the final episode with grace, humor, and joy which reminded me of this March talk when my mamma said something about comparison in order to get me out of a funk.
The truth is that like Sarah some things haven't gone the way I like, it's easy for doubt to creep in and then do the worse thing compare...
As the weekend starts, don't let comparison trick you. Win or loose, your journey is meant to be celebrated. There is allllways joy in the journey. TGIF.

It's becoming clearer how I should take up space in the world. What I can tell you is that service, storytelling and survivorship is at the core of my evolution...
So I sit humbly because last week I had the honor of talking with the gracious Elizabeth Smart Foundation who is a warrior in her own right. If you remember her story, you understand how deeply grateful I was to be in the room.
We talked about trauma, triumph, and how we are worthy of the joy we each fought for and strive to live out daily. It was real talk and she is lovely.
I hope you enjoy our conversation and share this simple truth to anyone you know who feels unlovable. YOU ARE WORTHY. Link in my bio to hear the full episode. Enjoy!

Let me ask you a question. Do you remember the BC (Before COVID) times? I don't know about you but I was in such a different place professionally and personally which is why I was honored that last week MPI Southern California Chapter invited me to share a process for how to evaluate your career. I really enjoyed myself and am grateful for such an engaging Q&A.
In this clip, I talk about the one thing I've done more than anything else in the past year: public speaking or as I like to call it storytelling.
What I know for sure is that we can and should evolve and the minute we let go of our ego, the next thing becomes clear.
Simply put, I'm open for my evolution and growth. Are you? I'm rooting for us all. Happy Thursday.
p.s. Shout out to my mom for STILL keeping a wall dedicated to me🤣 which you can kiiinda see in the background. Love you mamma.
Hey there. I don't know who needs to hear this and maybe this one is for me but as I go through a challenging season in my life (a story for another day) what keeps me together is brightspots and the light that is available to all of us daily.
Check out this clip from the The Glow Up Podcast and continue listening but most important, hold on because someone needs you to persist and carry forward. Thank you again Miss Casey Carter for sharing this virtual space with me last Saturday.
Happy Thursday to all.
Raise your ✋if you've hand a tough week. Yes, me too but as this clip says " I refuse to not carry forward" no matter the circumstance, try to look for brightspots and dance/sing my way thru days. Sorry Sam #🤣.
Do you want to hear more about some real life lessons and business? Subscribe to LaJoy Plans YouTube channel as I'm finally starting to upload all my presentations.
Most importantly, "Carry On."
You've got this.
I've got and as for me I know #godisincontrol. TGIF. Have a glorious weekend!
What I know with all my soul is that the next generation has alot to say and we better pay attention.
This clip aptly titled "Virtual Silence" served as a powerful opening of a recent client virtual conference. Intentionally, the young people are wearing black and white so that the message comes through more than anything. There are two main takeaways.
1. Virtual events should strive to include art to convey the mission moment, capture your attention and truly set the stage.
2. Include young people is always powerful.
