Why Isn’t This Map in the History Books?
By the age of 10, most children in the United States have been taught all 50 states that make up the country. But centuries ago, the land that is now the United States was a very different place. Over 20 million Native Americans dispersed across over 1,000 distinct tribes, bands, and ethnic groups populated the territory.
History is not there for you to like or dislike. It is there for you to learn from it. And if it offends you, even better. Because then you are less likely to repeat it. It’s not yours for you to erase or destroy.

Did you know? ✨💫

-

On June 2, 1924, American Indians were granted citizenship in the United States through the Indian Citizenship Act, also known as the Snyder Act. This significant milestone in American history marked an important step towards equality and recognition of Native Americans as full citizens of the country.

The Indian Citizenship Act was considered long overdue, as Native Americans had been living on the North American continent for thousands of years prior to the arrival of European settlers. Despite their profound connection to the land and their contributions to the shaping of American culture, Native Americans were often marginalized and denied the same rights and privileges as other American citizens.

By granting citizenship to American Indians, the United States government acknowledged their inherent rights as members of a diverse and rich cultural heritage. This act aimed to rectify the injustices and discrimination faced by Native Americans, allowing them to participate fully in civic life and enjoy the same protections and freedoms as other citizens.

Despite these positive aspects, the Snyder Act also had its drawbacks and limitations. While it granted citizenship to Native Americans, it did not address the deeper issues of tribal sovereignty and self-determination. Native American tribes continued to face challenges in preserving their lands, cultures, and traditions in the face of ongoing assimilationist policies and encroachments on their rights.

The Snyder Act did not fully remedy the historical injustices and inequalities that Native Americans had endured for generations. They continued to face systemic barriers to economic opportunities, healthcare, education, and other basic services. In many cases, the promise of citizenship did little to improve the social and economic conditions of Native American communities, leading to persistent disparities and disadvantage.

The Snyder Act was a double-edged sword that had both positive and negative implications for Native Americans in the United States. While it granted them citizenship and formal recognition, it also exposed the limitations of legal reforms in addressing the deeper issues of inequality and injustice. Moving forward, it is essential to continue working towards true reconciliation and justice for indigenous communities, by respecting their rights to sovereignty and self-determination, supporting cultural revitalization efforts, and addressing the root causes of their marginalization and disadvantage.
