Huge Big XII dual tonight between UNCO and FSU. Action will kick off at 8:00 PM MST. Big T has the dual 16-15 UNCO, while Little Nutty has it 19-12 UNCO. A quick look at the storylines at each weight:

125 - Jace Koelzer UNCO v. Jeremy Trinh FSU
It looks like the Bulldogs will be without Robert Garcia in this one, so the Bears have got to be looking to get bonus from Koelzer. A lot to ask of a freshman, although Koelzer has looked good this year.

133 - Mosha Schwartz UNCO v. Gary Joint FSU
Schwartz was electrifying in his dual meet debut against WVU. How will he stack up against the size, tenacity, and experience of past NCAA qualifier Joint?

141 - Brody Lamb UNCO v. DJ Lloren FSU
Lloren has been highly impressive for the Bulldogs after transferring in from UVU. Gotta think UNCO will want to start at 149 to give them some time to make a decision between Lamb and Chris Sandoval.

149 - Andrew Alirez UNCO v. Greg Gaxiola FSU
We all know Andrew Alirez is real. We will find out how real in a few hours. Gaxiola is a tough customer, but there has been no slowing down the true freshman from UNCO thus far.

157 - Jimmy Fate UNCO v. Jacob Wright FSU
Two talented wrestlers, this one will come down to who wants it more. These are the type of matches each man needs to win to be NCAA tournament-worthy.

165 - Austin Matthews UNCO v. Adam Kemp FSU
All signs point to Matthews stepping on the mat for his first dual action of the year. Will he be able to recapture the form that has seen him make deep NCAA tournament runs in the past?

174 - Billy Higgins UNCO v. Jackson Hemauer FSU
The Bulldogs will be thinking bonus for the highly-ranked Hemauer. Higgins has the ability to wrestle with him, but he needs to match the Bulldog's intensity for seven minutes.

184 - Alan Clothier UNCO v. Hunter Cruz FSU
The ultra-talented Clothier will look to go 2/2 in bonus point victories for the Bears in dual meets. The Bulldogs have struggled at this weight and will be looking to mitigate any possible damage Clothier might cause.

197 - Jacob Seely UNCO v. Ryan Reyes FSU
Gotta give the edge to the veteran Seely, but this has the feeling of one of those matches that true freshmen use to put themselves on the NCAA radar. The Bears need to be aware that they could be on the receiving end of Reyes' best match.

HWT - Dalton Robertson UNCO v. Randy Gonzalez FSU
Robertson had a brilliant dual debut at HWT in knocking off a ranked WVU competitor. He needs to avoid a letdown against Gonzalez, who has struggled this year but holds a size advantage over the Bear.

A couple of line-up updates for Saturday's Big XII duals:

For Wyoming, it looks like Chase Zollman will be the guy at 141. At 149, both Jensen brothers are listed, which is interesting considering Logan has been wrestling 157. Expect Jaron to get the nod, though. Dewey Krueger is listed as the probable at 157, the weight we projected him at preseason, after competing at 165 at the Cowboy Open. The Cowboys appear to be rolling with Cole Moody at 165.

For Air Force, Alec Opsal is OUT. Either Parker Simington or Dylan Martinez will get the nod. We had mentioned that Air Force's chance of winning the dual may fall on Opsal's shoulders; that will now be up to one of these two gentlemen.

Northern Colorado lists Moscha Schwartz as a probable at 133; expect to see his redshirt pulled against WVU. As we speculated, the Bears may be a little banged up at 141, 165, and 174, as multiple wrestlers are projected at each weight. They've got to be hoping at least two of their starters at these weights can give it a go on Saturday.

West Virginia looks to be wrestling the line-up we expected, with only one wrestler listed at each weight. The one item of note is that Nick Kiussis is listed as the probable at 165 after sitting out this past weekend, making for a potential top-20 showdown with Austin Matthews in Greeley, if Matthews can wrestle.

Utah Valley goes 1-1 on Saturday, defeating Sacred Heart and falling to Purdue in their first dual action of the season

09/11/2019

Utah Valley looks to be heading into their first duals of the season without Matt Findlay, Demetrius Romero, AND Tate Orndorff. Also, Ty Smith is not listed as a probable at 133. This is not overly surprising, as Utah Valley pretty regularly fields less-than-optimal dual lineups. They should still be favored against Scared Heart, but will be heavy underdogs against Purdue.

The rest of the Big XII will be grinding it out on the open tournament scene.

Fresno State projected line-up for tomorrow's season-opening duals:

125 - Robert Garcia or Jeremy Trinh
133 - Gary Joint
141 - DJ Lloren or Lawrence Saenz
149 - Greg Gaxiola
157 - Jacob Wright or Beau Colombini
165 - Adam Kemp
174 - Jackson Hemauer or Dominic Kincaid
184 - Hunter Cruz
197 - Ryan Reyes or Isaiah Perez
HWT - Randy Gonzalez

This line-up differs significantly from what we anticipated this season, and not in a good way. Notable absences include 141 Chris Deloza (does have a redshirt remaining and could be utilizing it), 149 Khristian Olivas (possible injury?), and HWT AJ Nevills (projected redshirt) and Josh Hokit (football). In addition, with Hemauer listed at 174, this bumps Dominic Kincaid, one of the Bulldogs' more experienced grapplers, from the line-up.

While we have suspected that Bulldogs would be weak at HWT until Hokit's football season ends, this line-up looks marginally better at 174, while significantly weaker at 149 and 184. At 141 and 197, the changes shouldn't have a major net effect in either direction, as the Bulldogs will be looking to prove themselves at these weight classes.

Fresno State will go into the Battle on the Midway as major underdogs to Wisconsin and Army, while the dual against Navy, on paper, appears to be a toss-up.

Be sure to follow the Four-Point Nearfall podcast for all of your Big XII wrestling commentary.

A couple of recent updates to some Big XII line-ups:

Grant LaMont, projected as a possible 157 starter for UVU, is out for the season with an injury, per the school's website. So neither of the LaMont brothers in the line-up for UVU this season.

Jackson Hemauer, NCAA qualifier at 184 for Fresno State last season, wrestled down at 174 for the Bulldogs during wrestle-offs. If this move is permanent, it leaves some serious question marks for the Bulldogs at 184, 197, and HWT in the early going. We are sure to find out more soon, as FSU starts off the season with November 1st duals against Wisconsin, Army, and Navy at the Battle on the Midway.
