At its core, a murder mystery game is a puzzle. The writer carefully constructs it from language and logic and then pulls it apart into a handful of individual pieces that players put back together.

You’d think the person who wrote the story also has the strongest grasps on how it should be solved. But players have a dastardly habit unraveling every loose thread, interrogating every detail and coming up with wild and wonderful theories that are 100% not part of the intended solution.

This sounds like an unfortunate state of affairs but it’s actually the most powerful resource at a writer’s disposal! From clarifying a key plot point to incorporating an unintended implication into the murderer’s motivation, feedback from players is vital!

Death seems like a pretty dark plot point whichever way you slice it but there are unspoken rules about which are the right ways for a victim to die.

Some deaths strike the perfect balance between high stakes drama with tongue-in-cheek fun. Shot in the heart? Stabbed in the back? Slain by a cocktail with a poisonous twist? All good banter.

But slowly freezing to death or burning alive? Something about a painful death cuts a little too close to the bone for most people looking to play a good-ol-fashioned murder mystery game.

Could a mystery party that delves into the darker ways to do away with a victim work? Absolutely. But 99% of the time we like to dispatch our less fortunate characters in one swift and painless blow. And if you happen across a game that dives headfirst into darker themes, we’ll absolutely let you know about it! After all, it’s up to you to pick your poison…

🏆 We're so proud to have won THIRD PRIZE at the pitch event! 🏆
We won £1K and the opportunity to work with on an advertising campaign - we couldn't be more grateful.

Massive congratulations to The Nyangibo Gallery and Bechdel Theatre for winning first and second prize (so well deserved), and to everyone else in the Accelerator for an incredible job on the night ❤️

The past three months of Accelerator development have been truly transformative and we can't wait for the next part of our journey.
