Though container and wreath work fills the better part of my schedule, it’s always a treat to receive a cut flower order especially one that includes garden roses and ranunculus.

Don't forget about edibles when shopping for cold-hardy container options. Lettuce adds a frilly touch and strawberries will soften the edges as they start to spill. Violas and pansies make for beautiful garnish.

An early spring combination of Black Cat pussywillow, daffodils, heuchera, violas and dwarf iris. Just out of the frame are two different kinds of lettuce and the prettiest variety of lysimachia. If ever stuck on color combinations for your planters, just look to Mother Nature. She knows best.

Dawn Rosenbaum Mitchell and I had a fantastic time teaching nearly 50 people how to make wreaths from scratch this past Friday. Our prep started months in advance and here's a look into the process. If you want a sneak peek into my next post which will be all about the finished product, head over to Instagram - Hackberry Hill Flowers. The wreaths are spectacular!

Dawn of Dawn Mitchell Designs and I had a wonderful time gathering all the goodies needed for a beautiful wreath workshop. While these pandemic/supply issue times call for a bit more planning, creativity and patience, w...

Annuals are some of my favorite cut flowers! I planted coleus for a client and encouraged her to bring the clippings inside. Cut stems will last for weeks in a vase and often you will start to see new roots forming. A win win!

Thank you to WC Press for featuring our courtyard garden in the July issue! It's my favorite little part of our ever-a-work-in-progress garden, and I write about it in detail at www.hackberryhillflowers.com under the Journal tab.

My favorite garden is a wall or hedge-enclosed one so when we bought our current house, I was thrilled with the potential of a courtyard garden. My personal aesthetic leans towards suffocation - the more enclosed, the b...

The July garden is a generous one! I grow many of the flowers I use for clients to ensure clean and long-lasting blooms. This time of year, I can almost exclusively snip foliage and flowers from my garden for orders which is a wonderful thing. Visit my website www.hackberryhillflowers.com and click on Journal to read about container gardening, hydrangea care and more.

June blooms atop two fantastic reference guides. Modern Mix is as beautiful a book as it is practical. If you are a treasure hunter, your book will likely end up looking like mine - dog-eared and covered in post-it notes! And, In Bloom, for anyone who enjoys growing flowers from seed and wants to try his/her hand at a cutting garden. Much of what I snipped today was started on windowsills in my house in the late winter, and this author makes it really easy to figure out what to grow and how to have success once seeds are sown.

Flowers for a sweet friend who specified yellow for a themed barbeque. The airy white flower is 'Covent Garden' Gypsophilia or baby's breath from my garden. A far cry from the typical double form found in grocery store bouquets. It is always fun deciding which dancers or ethereal flowers should float above the more showy blooms and this Gypsophilia never disappoints. Another favorite is the pineapple mint tucked into this arrangement. It looks good, smells good, and has a wonderfully long vase life.

One of the best parts about shopping with local growers is how generous so many are with their flower knowledge and experience. It's always a good day when I can come home from a grower and scribble gleaned tips into my notebook. There is always more to learn and will always be! Can you guess what kind of flower farm I visited today?
