When the wedding flower brief is 'making a statement' 💥

It was so much fun to play with colour for my last wedding of the year. Louisa gave me complete creative freedom to run with her brief, and I'm so grateful as this how weddings florists can create their best work in this trust space.

Here's a run-down of L&D's wedding flowers, and a few quick BTS photos taken during wedding week:

🧨The vibe:
Big, statement flowers, less floaty, dainty, more 'in your face' focal flowers.

Tonal Pinks and Blush, with pops of Red and statement Fuschia, with a touch of cream

Big, blousy Baby Pink & Fushcia Roses, petal-heavy blush Ranuncs, luxurious Red Garden Roses, Scarlet Skimmia for depth

So often I hear newly-engaged couples pining for a crisp white wedding flower colour palette but worry it'll blend too much into their outfit/won't make an impact/feel like it's just a Winter Wedding palette.

I'm here to tell you:

A) A combination of interesting textures, shapes and plenty of movement from your flowers will ensure your bouquet won't blend into the background

B) White can be super impactful! White wedding flowers suit any time of year, are versatile, and can be just as fun as any colour palette

C) There are no rules. It's your wedding, you do you. I'll be making sure your wedding flowers look incredible on the day

My favourite part of being a wedding florist?

Meeting and connecting with the most awesome couples, seeing a concept go from a sketch to reality on their wedding day, and being able to take some wed-min stress off so my couples feel assured that their wedding flowers are in the best possible hands.

Meeting Annabel & Frankie has been such a highlight; as one of my earliest confirmed couples upon launching Bloominati Florals in early 2021, getting to know them and seeing them finally have their day was really special.

In my happy place, surrounded by flowers, about to start the wedding bouquet.

I'm Gemma and welcome to my small corner of Facebook. Here are some things you should know about me:

⚡ I care, a lot. I'm a girl that loves a timeline and a spreadsheet, there won't be a detail I wouldn't have considered when it comes to your wedding flowers

⚡ I didn't always have a flower studio. I launched Bloominati Florals in early 2021, where I'd create all of my weddings out of a tiny basement flat in Hove. It was tricky, but not impossible!

⚡ I'm an introvert at heart, but get incredibly animated when I'm chatting flowers and plans with my couples

⚡ The night before flowers arrive from the wholesaler is like a mini Christmas Eve to me

⚡ I spent the majority of my 20's in Sales & Marketing before pulling a complete 180 into Floristry. I'm now 5 years in and have never been happier

⚡ So much so, that I recently took the leap and went full-time with Bloominati Florals, having spent the last year and a half balancing a part-time customer service role and weddings. Again, tricky, but not impossible

We all know the big ones such as the wedding venue and your photographer are right up there as some of the most important wedding suppliers to book first, but when it comes to selecting your remaining wedding dream team, it can be tricky to know what to tackle first.

Ultimately, it all comes down to your priorities, and the wedding suppliers hthat you couldn't imagine not being a part of your vision.

In terms of locking in wedding flowers, I have couples secure their date anywhere between 18 months - 8 months prior to their wedding day.

Right now, our busiest booked in 2023 months are May, June, August and September, with better availability in the early and late parts of the year.

And remember, you don't need to have the whole wedding flower plan figured out before approacing your dream wedding florist - that's what we're here for!

Heres a question I get asked frequently when couples enquire that doesn't have a quick answer:

"How much does an flower installation cost?"

I LOVE creating high-impact wedding Ceremony installations - I believe they make your budget go way further and create a certain 'wow' factor that's instant, as opposed to opting for lots of small arrangements across multiple areas.

However, so many factors can affect the price point of an installation, making it not something that can be answered instantly. Factors such as:

🤍 Abundance
🤍 Size & Proportion - where it will be placed in the room?
🤍 Budget & Priorities - how would it affect other areas of your checklist?
🤍 Extra help - will more than one florist be needed on the day to create it?
🤍 Labour

Here's a misconception I'm seeing lately that I'd like to clear up in hopes it'll help alleviate some stress when planning:

✨️You do not need to have your entire wedding flower plan in place and be fully decided on the details before you secure your date with your wedding florist ✨️

This includes details such as:

🌸 How many table designs there will be
🌸 Second placements of statement Ceremony designs
🌸 Logistics
🌸 How many wedding bouquets/buttonholes there will be (if you're including them)
🌸 Specific flower selections

I'm sharing this because I'm here to help you work all of these gorgeous details out along the way so that they're in line with your vibe, venue, and budget.

We'll certainly discuss a plan during our consultation and have the big decisions in place such as any high-impact designs plus the colour palette, but in terms of details, please don't feel pressure to have this all decided right away.

My advice will always be if you want to work with a certain wedding supplier, vibe well with them, love their style, trust the guidance that they've given you during the enquiry process, and have a general good feeling about it all, get them locked in!

A closer look at Abbie's wedding bouquet from this weekend✨️

The Flowers:
A seaonsal recipe choc-full of Garden Roses, Lissianthus, Antirrhinums and Sweet Peas

The Colour Palette:
Tonal Blushes, Creams and Whites, ensuring no two shades were the same

The Vibe:
Summery, textural and fun. Scent was super important to Abbie, and this bouquet smelt DIVINE

Handing you your bouquet is such an important moment to me. I want you to be holding something that makes you feel phenomenal and is an extension of your personality in the form of gorgeous blooms.

Want to know a secret or two?

I was thinking last night about some of the key moments that define my life as a wedding florist, so I thought I'd share them with you.

😬 THE MOST NERVEY
Handing over your bouquet. I'd have poured my heart and soul into it, and I want you to love it as much as I do! Oh that, or designing in hot weather.

😣 THE HARDEST
The lack of sleep the night before the wedding due to the adrenaline and excitement, or going back to the venue the next day to pack down. Everything physically hurts, and taking everything apart that's the accumulation of sometimes up to a year's worth of planning is 😭 What goes up, must come down.

🥰 THE BEST
When the flowers arrive from the wholesaler and I see the colour palette come to life, or when clients become friends. Or when I see you all entering the Ceremony holding your flowers, or finding the most perfect shade of silk ribbon, or when you rave about how special your fleurs made you feel online and reading your kind words. That was totally more than one thing, sorry not sorry.

I wouldn't change a thing.

Melissa & Alex's big day is the perfect example of how high-impact floral arrangements can be repurposed throughout the day so that:

M&A's Ceremony Aisle flowers went on to became an epic doorway entrance, which was then moved again later on in the evening to in sit front of the top table

Their romantic Ceremony Archway was repurposed to then sit behind their top table and create a gorgeous backdrop for speeches and frame the couple.

Just Emily looking like a complete goddess back in January, the wedding that kicked off an incredible 2022 ahead.

Things are really starting to ramp up now, with weddings every weekend, prep is in full swing and I cannot wait 💪

Wedding florist prep the month before your wedding includes activities like:

💫 Finalising the flower recipe
💫 Preparing sundrie orders with my wholesalers (vases etc)
💫 Final consultations with my lovely couples to confirm arrangements and completing logistics checklists for the 'morning of' plan
💫 Liaising with venues to check what time we can arrive to set up/go back to pack down
💫 Confirming plans with freelancers

I get so excited for my couples (we could have been planning anywhere between 4 months to a year beforehand!) that it can be a little sad when it's over and I hand over the bouquets! Friendships are made, life details are shared, I couldn't imagine doing anything else 💖

A floral ingredient that's taken me by surprise recently - Spray Carnations! They're the little floaty terrecotta-rust toned floaty flowers that you can see in the photo. They come in this small variety, or a slightly larger bloom which is more commonly seen.

Carnations have a bad rep for being old-fashioned and frumpy, but give them a chance when discussing your wedding flower recipe!

Here's why:

🤍 They're cost-effective, which frees up more budget for your more premium flowers in the mix such as your Roses, Peonies and Hydrangea.

🤍 We can do all sorts of trickery with Carnations, making them look super fluffy and impressive. Used en mass, they can mimic the look of our Peonies, Blooms or Hydrangeas if they're not in season at

🤍 They're super long-lasting out of water, so they're perfect for installations such as archways, ceiling installations or floral columns, they'll still be looking amazing by the end of the evening.

🤍 They come in sooo many amazing colours, some of my favorite varieties include 'Caramello' and 'Apple Tea' (give them a Google!)

🤍 The spray variety mimic the look of butterflies, and provide lots of movement and depth if you're looking for a wedding bouquet with some bounce.

So, there's my argument for the trusty Carnation. Did I change your mind? Let me know!

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to what 'needs' to be included!

My advice always is to focus on abundance rather than lots of items and place emphasis on designs that that will make the biggest impact and designs that can be repurposed throughout the day. These designs that will ultimately make your budget work harder.
