For picture-perfect tea ceremony photos, save the following tips:

1. Set up the tea ceremony in a well-lit space- Combine the use of both natural lighting and artificial lights

2. Give decor and backdrop height- This creates a great background for group photos

3. Angle chairs and furniture- This allows all faces to be easily captured, especially during the tea offering

4. Don't be afraid to have raw emotions captured- Raw emotions make the most memorable shots.

In Vietnamese, the Tea Ceremony is known as Lễ Gia Tiên.

Lễ=Ceremony
Gia- Gia Đình= Family
Tiên- Tổ Tiên= Ancestors
& - Đầu Tiên= First

Put together, Lễ Gia Tiên is the couple's first official ceremony before their family and ancestors.

Lễ Gia Tiên incorporates both tea and ancestral rituals and is a symbolic tradition to pay respect to ancestors and family members.

Lễ Gia Tiên is celebrated in 3 of 5 Vietnamese wedding ceremonies.

A Vietnamese wedding is broken down into several ceremonies. These include:
• Lễ Dạm Ngõ (Proposal Ceremony)
• Lễ Đính Hôn (Engagement Ceremony)
• Lễ Rước Dâu (Bridal Procession)
• Lễ Vu Quy (Betrothal Ceremony)
• Lễ Tân Hôn (Wedding Ceremony)

And as part of these ceremonies the Tea & Ancestral Ceremony (Lễ Gia Tiên) is performed.

These individual ceremonies make up a complete Vietnamese wedding.

It is important to note that these terms are not interchangeable- they are all individual ceremonies with unique purposes.

Tea ceremonies are a significant part of Vietnamese weddings.

The serving of tea gives the couple an opportunity to pay respects to their parents and elders as well as a honour their ancestors.

Traditional Vietnamese weddings are made up of 5 different ceremonies:
- Lễ Dạm Ngõ- Proposal ceremony
- Lễ Đính Hôn/ Đám Hỏi- Engagement ceremony
- Lễ Rước Dâu- Bridal/ Wedding Procession
- Lễ Vu Quy- Betrothal Ceremony
- Lễ Tân Hôn- Wedding Ceremony

The "tea ceremony" aka Lễ Gia Tiên is not a separate ceremony on it's own, but is incorporated into all the other ceremonies.

However the term "Tea ceremony" or "Lễ Gia Tiên" is often used as the overarching term of these events as a whole.

Vietnamese culture has many proverbs that teach important values or explain moral concepts.

A well-known Vietnamese proverb is "Uống nước nhớ nguồn. Ăn quả nhớ kẻ trồng cây".

This translates to "When drinking water, remember its source. When eating fruit, remember the person who planted the tree".

This proverb emphasizes the importance of gratitude and remembering those who have contributed to our well-being and success.

We are reminded of this proverb during a Vietnamese tea ceremony when the bride and groom perform meaningful rituals to pay respect to ancestors and express gratitude to parents, family, and everyone who have invested their time, energy, and resources into nurturing them.

Some of the most common items you may expect to find on a Vietnamese family altar include

• Religious icons: Depending on religious background, differing religious figures or icons may be displayed on the family altar ie. crucifix in a Catholic home

•Ancestral portrait: Photos of ancestor/ departed family members that the family wish to honour

•Incense burner: An ornately decorated round brass or porcelain bowl filled with sand or uncooked rice to hold up incense sticks.

•Incense sticks: Aromatic sticks that when burnt are beleived to empower spiritual focus and welcome spirits.

•Candles: The lighting of candles symbolise new beginnings. For events such as weddings; red candles represent good luck and fortune.

•Flowers: The type of flowers displayed reflects the occasion. For celebrations like weddings, the most common colours used altar flowers are red and yellow. Red represents luck and good fortune. Yellow/gold symbolises happiness and prosperity.

•Lotus flowers: National flower of Vietnam

Additional decorations may also adorn the ancestral altar when celebrating special events like weddings.

For many Vietnamese families, paying respect to ancestors is part of an overarching familial value.

Rites such as offering tea, incense and burning candles are often practiced to honour ancestors.

As part of a traditional tea ceremony, bride and groom and their parents also offer incense and gifts to ancestors. This is a symbol of respect and allow the family to ask for blessing on the marriage.
