🧺🚜 FOOD FOR THOUGHT 🚜🧺
Let's talk boysenberries this morning! I'll tell you a little about what I've learned these past 2 years! Year one of harvest was great but entirely experimental. I had just finished the complete renovation of my new/old home and I wasn't exactly sure what plants were actually going to grow in the spring. I was pleasantly surprised when the WAY overgrown and highly under cared for boysenberry bushes produced at least 10-12lbs of berries. I waited until it was cold and did some research on how to prune them properly. Turns out the old stems turn woody when they're done producing. As you can see in some of my pictures this year, those stems that have growth are already starting to turn. The new growth is green, has no berries but keeps getting longer! After I printed them down to almost nothing, I weeded out the grass and overgrowth which took days! I really wasn't sure I'd get much this year because I wasn't even sure if I had pruned the right parts since it had gotten so bad. Fast forward to this morning and the harvest WILL be plentiful! Aside from a smaller berry due to the drought conditions we've been experiencing, I'm sure they'll be just as tasty! There are 2 that will be ready for the picking tomorrow! Here's another tidbit...they aren't ripe until they're completely purple..very deep purple. They have to be picked at JUST the right time or they will begin to shrivel and die almost immediately after ripening. Since they all ripen at different times, it'll be a busy few weeks harvesting two times daily (morning and night) to pick them at just the right time so that they have the perfect flavor! There's something beautiful about starting your day with an early morning walk then playing with food! I noticed some of the boysenberries are already turning red when i was watering this morning! I'll have some jam before too long! Picked some fresh basil, rosemary and mint for recipes then came in to try a new recipe for marinated mozzarella that I may just add to the menu for the 4th of July catering job! It's a great day to have a great day so get out there and enjoy it!
