👉Does cultural tourism help or harm ethnic minorities?
Over the past few months, we visited some local communities in Namibia 🇳🇦 and we wondered what are the good and which the risky reasons to come into contact with local people.
💛Some GOOD reasons
- Cultural tourism is broadly defined as tourism related to the culture, lifestyle, art, architecture and religion of a particular place. It can include activities such as homestays or visits to places of worship, as well as activities to get more in touch with the traditions of the place you are visiting, its languages, its dress, its mythology, etc.
The wonderful thing about cultural tourism is that it showcases traditions and ways of life.
For ethnic groups, whose traditions may have faded with the rise of globalization, cultural tourism often allows them an outlet to revive their traditions, even if only in shows + And of course, cultural tourism can also be a fruitful source of income for ethnic groups, many of whom live in more rural areas without as many economic opportunities + plus a way to show their ethnic pride
🤔Some BAD reasons
- Moments of contact are reduced to a photo or video for social platforms; There is no real interest;
A small benefit is provided for a very short time;
There is an unequal distribution of economic benefits.
