Breaking News: Live music and theatre industries launch legal action against Government to force the publication of Events Research Programme data

Today the live music industry body LIVE and a range of theatre businesses, including Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group, Cameron Mackintosh, Michael Harrison and Sonia Friedman, have
commenced legal proceedings against the Government to force it to hand over the report of Phase 1 of the Events Research Programme (ERP).

The ERP is the Government’s research into Covid-19 mitigations in sport, entertainment and business conferences settings. The music industry and theatre businesses have repeatedly called on the Government to outline the scientific basis for its decision to maintain restrictions on events.

Despite portions of the ERP economic impact assessment being leaked to the media this week, the Government refused calls from many MPs in a debate on Tuesday 22 June to release the report in
full. The live entertainment sector has spent the last few months participating in, and paying for, full capacity pilot events as part of the ERP – including The BRIT Awards at The O2 arena, an outdoor
festival event in Liverpool for 5,000 people, a snooker tournament at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield and the Download festival for 10,000 people last weekend.

These events have been a huge success, according to the government itself in various press reports, showing that with proper precautions in place, live events at full capacity can go ahead safely.

But the Government chose to keep the live entertainment industry under severe restrictions from 21 June, while allowing parts of the economy that have not been subject to similar scientific studies,
including hospitality, public transport and retail, to operate. The Government has also refused to publish the results from the first phase of the Events Research Programme, despite saying that it
would do so on numerous occasions.

Mark Davyd CEO of MVT said: "Last week we called upon the government to release the results of the Events Research Programme. Without the data and evidence from this programme it is not possible to plan safe events that respond to the latest government position of creating Covid secure venues and gigs. The government has declined to release that information, has not provided a justifiable reason for the refusal to release, and cannot therefore engage with the sector to work on risk mitigations that might be required based on the contents of the report. This legal action is the inevitable outcome of the government's refusal to work with the sector to create evidenced based secure events, and we therefore reluctantly agree with the necessity to pursue it. The ball is firmly in the government's court; it is their refusal to work with the cultural sector that has resulted in this action."

💔

Today is truly devastating for the live events supply chain. After 15 months with all but no work and inadequate financial support from the Government, this industry is on its knees.

The Government’s Events Research Programme (ERP) has shown live events can go ahead safely, and the sector is ready to put the findings into action, but with audience restrictions remaining in place they are financially unviable. Because the Government has failed to prepare, we remain banned from earning a living, banned from rebuilding our sector, and banned from offering the live events people so desperately want and need.

This cannot carry on.

At Jimmy's we are all about supporting the music industry 🥁 We are very happy to announce that we are able to offer the Free Venue Hire initiative in our Liverpool basement venue to all artists, musicians and promoters who wish to host an event and perform onstage once again 🥳 After such a devastating time for our industry due to the effects of COVID-19, it’s now time to get back to gigs from June 2021 💃🏽 Our initiative aims to help kick-start the emerging live music scene by offering a stage and all necessary equipment and staff required for artists to be able to perform on stage whilst taking away the costs of putting on a show 💸 This way, the event organisers and bands can make as much revenue as possible to support their work 🤝 We will be offering free venue hire to all bookers from June 2021 to June 2022 🗓 Please contact our Events Manager Luke at [email protected] for all bookings and enquiries 🤘🏻See you down the front 🔥

The inevitable date change 💔
By the time we get to September, we will need this festival more than oxygen.

All tickets still valid, if you haven’t got yours yet and for the full INCREDIBLE line up and all details - https://futuramafestival.com/

FUTURAMA POSTPONED UNTIL SEPT 11TH & 12TH 2021

Unfortunately, we have had to bow to the inevitable and we are postponing the Futurama until later in the year. The new dates are the 11th and 12th of September 2021. We hope this won't cause too much inconvenience and it at least creates more time for the vaccine to be effective and make us all safer. On a brighter, happier note this means the festival will coincidentally now take place in same month as the original Futuramas in '79 to '83.

We have been working extremely hard since the start of January to reschedule everything and we will make a bigger announcement in February but 96% of the bands have re- confirmed, all the venues are the same and we are delighted to have Vive Le Rock, Louder Than war, Planet X and the AF Gang still on board. The new date has offered up exciting new possibilities with bands who want to play the Futurama so if anything, the festival line up will be even stronger.

All current tickets will remain valid so please keep hold of them. We all desperately need something we can look forward to after this awful time in all our lives. Hopefully by September, we will once again be able watch fantastic bands, socialise with friends and drink copious amounts of beer!

Your patience and your support are hugely appreciated by everyone at the Futurama.

Best Wishes the Futurama Festival Team
