Journey to Pomio: My Dream Adventure in East New Britain*
---
Join me on my first-ever trip to the breathtaking region of Pomio in East New Britain, Papua New Guinea. From exploring historical World War II sites in Rabaul to experiencing my first ship voyage on the MV Pomio, this adventure was truly unforgettable. Despite the rain, we accomplished our mission of conducting a landscape assessment for a conservation program. Watch as I share the beauty, challenges, and highlights of this remarkable journey!

Did you know? The *Living Root Bridges* of Meghalaya are made by weaving the aerial roots of Ficus elastica trees, a practice passed down by the Khasi and Jaintia communities for centuries! These natural bridges, some over 100 years old, are vital for crossing rivers, especially during monsoons. Recently added to UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list, these bridges also support local biodiversity, providing habitats for animals like squirrels and clouded leopards. They’re not only a cultural symbol but a testament to sustainable, nature-based engineering!

🌍 Lake Murray, Papua New Guinea's largest lake, spans 39 miles in length and 11 miles in width, expanding up to five times its size during the rainy season. Located in the remote Western Province and accessible by a short flight from Port Moresby, this vast lake is home to diverse fish species, abundant birdlife, and numerous crocodiles. Indigenous tribes live in stilted houses along its shores or on small islands within the lake. Visitors can experience this rich ecosystem and serene environment from the comfortable Lake Murray Lodge. 🌿

The Nakanai Mountains in Papua New Guinea are home to one of the world's most remarkable karst landscapes, featuring vast limestone caves and giant sinkholes. Over the past 50 years, international caving expeditions have explored and documented these underground wonders, uncovering extensive cave systems, underground rivers, and breathtaking natural formations. These efforts contribute to the preservation of the unique Nakanai Karst and its rich biodiversity, supporting conservation initiatives and raising awareness about the need to protect this extraordinary region.

Esa’ala Cave also known as the Mother of all Caves, located in Esa'ala, Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea is one of the most mysterious and least explored caves in the world. Known as the deepest cave globally, it remains 70% unexplored, with its true depth still unknown. In 1998, a team of 13 explorers ventured into the cave, but only one survived the perilous journey. The story inspired the movie "Sanctum," which depicts their harrowing experience. This cave also has literary significance, as it was immortalized in Samuel Taylor Coleridge's famous poem "Kubla Khan."

Nestled in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea, the Hegigio Gorge suspension bridge was once the highest pipeline bridge in the world, soaring 393 meters above the Hegigio River. Opened in 2005, this engineering marvel was designed to carry pipelines across its 536-meter span. Though primarily a pipeline bridge, its towering presence between steep canyon walls made it an awe-inspiring sight.

Back in the Uni days, as Foresters we say we are going to name our first born kids according to the trees we really like.

I had two names in mind for my first child, a male and an female name.

I named my first daughter Euodia (Melicope elleryana).

If I had a first born son the name should have been Cerbera (Cerbera manghas).

Below is a Pink Euodia (Melicope elleryana).

Dear Wantoks,

I'd like to introduce to you a learning site that you can learn as much as possible at your own phase for free.

"Learning for Nature" is an e-learning initiative by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) dedicated to fostering connections among policymakers, change-makers, and experts in biodiversity conservation. Offering a diverse array of courses and resources, the program champions the Sustainable Development Goals by underscoring the pivotal role biodiversity plays in their achievement. With options such as MOOCs, self-paced modules, webinars, and virtual events, participants—including foresters, conservationists, environmentalists, biologists, and others—can tailor their learning experience to suit their needs and schedules. Upon completing courses, learners receive certifications, all in alignment with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

I encourage everyone to register and start learning! Learning never stops.
