One ..of my greatest joys…”cooking food for others to enjoy.”
Here is how I remember it.I was 8 years old, home from school not feeling well, bored and alone, I picked up a “Family Circle “magazine and came across a beautiful picture and recipe for “French Chocolate Eclairs {Pate A Choux.)
By the time my sisters came home from school and my mom from work . I not only felt better ,but I had made them.🥄❤🥣
To everyones delight and enjoyment , I knew then that this was a great accomplishment .My wonderful Italian grandmother was an amazing cook and taught me so much, just by we watching her .
I loved receiving cook books for presents. As a young teen I watched Julie Child’s show , “The French Chef” on PBS religiously and would send away for recipes to WGBH in Boston. They would come old -school typed with her signature on them. I would practice cooking on the weekends at my grandmothres house under the watchful, scrutinising eye of my Unce Bill, and bring baked goods to my teachers and friends to eat at lunch. I was not doing that for popularity or brownie points, I just felt the need to create.
I loved my “home economics” class , and I think I was the teachers pet .
When it came time to decide on college or a career path, I wanted to go to culinary school, and in particular the CIA (Culinary Institute of America ). But in 1971 , NO WOMEN were admitted.(Sara Moulton , Gourmet magazine chef , Food Network fame , and can be heard on “Mill Street”on NPR, and Julia Childs prep cook was the first women to be expected ).
SO I did the next best thing and left New Jersey and went to college in New Hampshire , to get an education degree. I had fun cooking meals for my friends in the dorm kitchen. And when I moved off campus the good smells from my kitchen brought many a friends and neighbors to my door.
What more can I say, “I cook” And to my delight so do my sons, Stewart Bowman and Trev Bow. They are great cooks !
I did wind up in the food business,(so did Stewart Bowman) and earned my cuts and burns scars, as a “Kitchen Rat” My resume speaks for itself. SO as a senior , with one foot still in the kitchen door……….I am STILL at it . Thank you for reading .
