Sometimes centerpieces don’t need to be complicated. Though 8 would argue that 7 bottles per 12 tables with 7 different mini & micro arrangements is a lot more complicated than it looks! I used local blooms from and along with North American blooms and greens from plus and some peach spray roses from Columbia. Lots of color with simple styling, exactly what this bride wanted for her patio dinner reception.

Yesterday was a gorgeous day for a patio event at ! Last year’s wedding was celebrated with friends and family last night, and was delighted to design the flowers again. The bride wanted lots of color, so I used dahlias from (and a few from my own yard) along with and lots of other locally and North American grown blooms, like celosia, lisianthus, larkspur, snapdragons, amaranthus, and more. For the centerpieces, we went with a collection of medicine bottles with mini and micro arrangements for a vintage farm-to-table country look.

Yesterday delivered and set up flowers for a dinner reception at . Last year at the wedding, we did a bouquet for the bride, but this year for the dinner, we did and over-the-shoulder corsage, chocked full of blooms sculpted to fit over the strap of her dress. The bride wanted lots of color and peach roses, so the roses were a special order from Columbia while the rest is from North America and lots are locally sourced. These are the personals, the boutonnières and corsages, made of dahlias, gomphrena, and celosia with other blooms and greens from and .

is on vacation, but when the lake house hosts requests your help to host a cocktail party, you say YES!! In the middle of the mountains, I sourced my materials from the side of a dirt road. I don’t even know all the varieties by name, but I found a variety of flowers and greens with lots of texture and that could survive the transition to a vase. There was yarrow and Queen Ann’s Lace in abundance, some fabulous millet (that I now know I am allergic to), and a few different varieties of fern. Wildflower heaven! My studio was the deck. Stay tuned to see what I did with all these beautiful stems!

Had an extra stem of orange and put it in a bottle on my kitchen counter. It’s been a joy to watch it open a bit more with each passing day. Shine on, you brilliant stars!

A few deliveries this week — the big purple/pitcher arrangement went to an apartment lobby, another large arrangement went to my dentist’s office (with a gathered bouquet for my hygienist), and a couple of other hand-tied bouquets... Happy to see all these pretties out in the world!

Perfect for a coffee table or small dining table, I used a 5” cylinder to mix the silvery greens of dusty miller and gunni eucalyptus, with the bright spring green of viburnum and Green Dragon lepidium. Then I used coral roses and purple scabiosa as feature flowers with white Veronica, peach hypericum, and bright pink mountain alumroot flowers from my own garden.

Experimenting with this low, curvy vase. It’s chocked full of stems! Green Dragon Lepidium, solidago, larkspur, stock, ball mums, standard roses, garden roses, spray roses, lisianthus, and hypericum — I think that’s all!

Experimenting with different shapes and containers. This lovely bouquet in shades of purples is arranged in reused pitcher I found at a thrift shop a couple of months ago. Started with greens, Albanian Spurge Euphorbia, and deep purple irises all from my yard, then added bells of Ireland, fluffy lavender delphinium, and lush lavender stock. Next I added purple scabiosa (check out those pincushions!!), white Veronica, lavender lisianthus, and white Queen Ann’s Lace for texture, plus some great-smelling catmint from my garden! This large arrangement is great for an entry table or makes an impressive gift.

THRIFT SHOP FINDS: One of the best parts of being a sustainable designer is finding interesting and unique containers for my designs. Now, I love old stuff. I believe everything has a purpose, a kind of imbued spirit, and I imagine that things have a story! The bargain-hunter in me loves a great deal, but buying my floral containers at thrift shops checks a few boxes: 1) Saves really great items from a landfill, which much of this stuff would wind up if not resold and repurposed. 2) REUSES a perfectly good item that hasn’t fully lived out its life. Do YOU want to be tossed before you’re done?!? 3) My clients like unique and different things, and using thrift-shop finds allows me to give my clients one-of-a-kind arrangements in one-of-a-kind containers. 4) A standard vase costs around $2-5 wholesale and is manufactured in countries on the other side of the world with cheap labor and shipped to the US. I can often find the same vases (used but in good condition) for a $1 or $2 “donation” to a good cause, like the or . AND, all my customers who return vases for reuse get $5 off their next order! Less cost on vases means a few extra flowers in arrangement, too. 5) Not everything suits my style, so some buys need a little fixing up, and I love a transformation!

I love silver items and fell in love with this silver cake stand with a grape motif. Thrift shops are great places to find items for hosting — cake stands, punch bowls, platters and pitchers... If you are planning a small post-pandemic get-together, I have lots of hosting supplies available for rent, or let me do some thrift shop sourcing for you!

I worked freelance for Mother’s Day, but a friend of my daughter called at the last minute in desperation! I had some flowers in Hobbes (my lady cooler), and after closing the shop Sunday, I went home and made this bouquet for Mama Maria. Delighted to do my own thing again and be able to share my passion with others!

I love making hand-tied bouquets — perfect for the client who has plenty of vases. I combine color and texture to create full and lush bouquets, ready to drop in your own container (last pic). Check out Mom’s review too! Now, doesn’t your mom deserve better flowers?

Yesterday I trimmed my forsythia bushes and brought some branches inside to force bloom. (IMO, early spring/before blooming is the best time to cut back so you can enjoy the blossoms indoors.) Forsythia is a harbinger of Spring, and I always look forward to seeing these pops of bright color emerge from a gray winter. As a little girl, my mama called them goldenrods. When I lived in Charlottesville, there was a hillside behind the University of Virginia covered in forsythia, and the burst of yellow come springtime would simply take your breath away! I love keeping my Forsythia bushes lush and wild with long branches shooting in every direction. This variety puts out some big blossoms too, and I can’t wait to share full bloom with you soon!

I haven’t touched flowers in at least two weeks, but I HAVE been hard at work putting my personal life back together and making plans for the next stage of blooming my business! This week I invested a lot of time on my own small business financial literacy and Efflorescence’s accounting structure — which basically means I finally sat down and prepared to file my taxes as a real small business owner! Today is our appointment with our accountant, so I decided to add a little green to my daily in hopes of getting my billions back. Like most Americans, a lot changed for us in 2020 — we lost half our household income when a) I lost my job and b) my husband had to take a reduction in pay, and then I started this little business. Hoping we’ve made good decisions along the way and don’t have to pay this year, but overall, we’re happy where we are right now and feel incredibly blessed to be surviving the pandemic without severe financial strain.

I always need days like today, where I collect all my notes and scribbles and sit down with my journal and get my act together. Seeing all the to-dos captured on paper and laid out in order makes me feel better, like it’s all more doable, more achievable. I haven’t had/made much time for this self-preserving practice these past 6 months. My journal was almost 100% flower shop related from September to February. It’s alittle sad that I ignored myself and my life for so long. I thought I’d learned that lesson. But I’m here now, living intentionally. Big plans for lots of joy. 😎

I am excited and delighted to announce that I am combining forces with the owner of and will now be Floral Manager and lead designer at Bloom Fresh Flowers in Old Town Alexandria! Bloom has a stellar reputation as one of Old Town’s finest artisan florists, and I’m thrilled to have found a professional home (outside of my basement) where I can make my kind of flowers! I think it’s pretty serendipitous that Efflorescence means the state of blooming. Is that a sign? 🧐 We’re rebuilding the operation and reopening Tuesday, September 8, after a 6-week hiatus due to COVID, and we’ll be debuting a new website soon. Efflorescence will still exist, for the time being, but since I’ll be at the shop so much and really want to see it succeed, I invite you to follow and place your future orders with me at the shop. And feel free to grab your mask and stop by to see me sometime! I can’t wait!!!
