When Everything Changes…
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” – James 1: 17, NIV
Sharon has been going through a season of change in her life. There have been positive changes like the start of her online business and the news that she’s pregnant after years of infertility. Now, she and her husband are in the middle of buying their first home.
But along with these changes, there have been some losses, too. Her mother passed away after a lengthy battle with an illness and her best friend moved to another country.
With so much changing, Sharon has found comfort in focusing on the things that haven’t changed. Her husband’s encouragement and support have been steadfast. Her friend’s continued text messages and notes make her feel loved.
But more than that, she’s thankful for the fact that God’s unchanging character. She often finds herself saying, “When everything changes, God doesn’t.” Those five words give her the courage and the confidence to embrace this season of change.
Maybe you can relate to Sharon. You’re going through your own changes in life and you may sometimes feel overwhelmed or even abandoned. In those moments, look to God’s unchanging nature to find comfort and support.
God, thank You for being faithful and constant. Remind me when a season of change comes that I can look to You for support and guidance. Please be with me, Father and reassure my heart.

Blaming 2020 for all the issues is called VICTIM MENTALITY. It’s toxic. It will only fuel the powerlessness and hopelessness in you (and the world). It’s hard, but we don’t need to make it harder in our minds.

What can you do instead?
1. Emotional detox with crying, exercise, whatever - just take time to get it out. No shame! It’s healthier than taking it out on others.
2. Focus on gratitude. Make a list of positives from 2020.
3. Help a friend or neighbor - even if it’s something small
4. Encourage someone in person or on social media
5. Step away from the news/social media (it’s DESIGNED to polarize with or without fact)
6. Stop engaging in polarizing comments sections on social media
7. Start a movement to bring some positivity into your community (for you go-getters)
8. Accept the things you cannot change
9. Change the things you can
10. Add beauty to your living space
11. Focus on a hobby
12. Start a creative project you can finish with your own hands
13. Finish a project you put down ages ago
14. Repeat all the things you’re grateful for every day
15. Spend time in prayer
16. Read the Bible
17. Read a good book you know will end in a way that leaves you happy
18. Watch a movie with a happy ending
19. Watch a comedy
20. Clean out a drawer or closet
21. Clean out the fridge
22. Spend time in nature away from electronics
23. Go for a walk to get out of the house
24. Unfollow anyone on social media who polarizes with headlines, memes, posts, or comments (you don’t need their spiral taking up your bandwidth)
25. Spend time with family, kids playing games
26. Cook a meal with help from family, friends
27. Set a goal to have a number of meetings with friends - in person or online!
28. Actively choose to forgive the media, our leaders, family, enemies - those grudges are toxic and will steal your sleep and sanity
29. Take some deep breaths multiple times during the day - set alarms to remind you
30. Play with a kid. They usually still remember how to do it. They can re-teach you if you give them a chance to lead. (Seriously, the floor is lava - GO!)
