This quote comes to mind regularly in relation to the wars, rumours of wars and political and social decisions that are made in service of money and power and not the human being and our wellbeing - that is to say you and I.

Whilst at a protest for Palestine a woman came up to my friend and I and said protesting won’t work…doesn’t work…that she’d been protesting years prior to no avail.

As we see Israel continue with its genocide whilst politicians pretend to obfuscate and play dumb in the face of this wickedness as Israel simultaneously expand their settlements and war efforts to neighbouring countries, carrying out an annexation they already said they were going to to do…with full support from key political powers…

…This quote comes to mind.

When billions are spent to fund wars instead of housing and rehabilitating the homeless and preventing the need for food banks and destitution (in this day and age), this quote comes to mind.

Whilst human beings live and work in desperate situations just so that I can type this on my phone this quote comes to mind.

We create what we are. I’ve seen that through my own creations - thus to create something (policies and infrastructure) that has human well-being at its heart there is a need to understand and transform the human condition and consciousness, the common denominator, that has enabled and continues to enable this…wickedness. There’s no other word to describe it.

But there is this quote from bell hooks which brings this need to life for me: “There must exist a paradigm, a practical model for social change that includes an understanding of ways to transform consciousness that are linked to efforts to transform structures”.

On Sunday, 8th December, The Church of Deep House returns to Bricks Bar in Brixton. The Ton of Brix, from 3-10pm with “Sunday Service” with an objective to highlight the importance of mental health and the value of therapy staring with sound therapy ✨

From 4:30pm:
Guest speaker, Tafrina DuBois, a Sound Therapist, musician and seasoned DJ who has played with the likes of Black Coffee and Tony Humphries, will deliver a talk on the therapeutic benefits of sound, music and the dance floor.

Of this Tafrina says: “Sound and frequency is medicine for the mind, body and soul and a way to achieve collective healing through the shared experience of listening and movement. In support of this, the dance floor should be revered and seen as a sacred space” ✨

The talk will also include discussion/Q&A providing you with a non-judgmental space to ask questions or share your experiences. DJs Carl Grant, DJ DuBois and Farrah DJ will then take you on a Deep House musical journey until 10pm.

I’m absolutely in love with the selection from last Friday’s radio show,. Like seriously - I fu***ng love it. For me it was the perfect vibe and reflected a decision I’d made to get real with my deepness. ✨

In addition to the awesome selection, as part of the show I talk a bit about the importance of therapy and maintaining our mental and physiological health as the two are not separate and impact each other.

I also talk about why I’m incorporating the importance of therapy into The Church of Deep House event series starting with Sound Therapy on the 8th December (ticket link in bio https://ra.co/events/2038273 )

It’s Church of Deep House Friday and I’m very much looking forward to returning to my happy place which is the studio today from 12-1pm (GMT).

During today’s show I’ll be talking a bit about the evolution of The Church of Deep House, the upcoming Sunday Service event on 8th December, and why I’ve decided to include a talk on Sound therapy with Tafrina DuBois alongside the importance of therapy to our mental health and general wellbeing.

The musical journey will then commence where we (you and I) will cruise between the BPMs of 116-118 (+/-) with music from artists such as , , , and more to create this subtle, sensual, downtempo deep house vibe and feel that’s reminiscent, in part, of my opening set for Sunday Service, 10th November 💗

It is my pleasure to introduce Tafrina DuBois, Sound Therapist, musician and DJ, who will be delivering a talk that focuses on the therapeutic effects and benefits of sound, music and the dance floor on Sunday, 8th Dec at Bricks Bar, ground floor bar ✨

With many of you saying that music is “your therapy” the discussion/Q&A section will allow for you to share your experiences potentially enabling others to connect with ways in which music is therapeutic to them. Sharing and connection in this way can be so healing and of course contributes to one’s mental well being and more ✨

About
aka has been playing deep and soulful house music for the past 20+ years. Starting out on Pirate Radio in 2003 under the name of ‘Sole Intent’, she played for the well renowned .fm before going onto play with Push.FM, Bang Radio and finally radio in Deptford.

DJ DuBois has gigged in and around London as well as internationally; some of her many highlights include playing at the Ministry of Sound London alongside , supporting at IPM Rome, a residency in Colombia at the luxury resort of Kilymandiaro and various bookings on her travels through Cuba and Mexico. Most recently she has enjoyed playing for the well renowned Into Soul parties on her home turf in London.

As a musician and Sound Therapist, DJ DuBois has a deep understanding of the science of sound and its intrinsic link with human nature. She views sound and frequency as medicine for the mind, body and soul and a way to achieve collective healing through the shared experience of listening and movement. As such, every booking is viewed as an opportunity to change the atmosphere for the greatest good.

As far as DJ DuBois is concerned, the dance floor should be revered and seen as a sacred space. The offering of music should always be treated as a symbiotic dance of give and take, and the shared experience used as a portal for the highest transformation of energy. ✨

This set was played on 23/11/23 on . It initially started off as a selection of 6 tracks under an alter ego I’d created called Alt Her where I would occasionally play deep and emotive electronic music to include Techno and Electronica, as an expression of the deeper self beyond thought/mind and outside of the typical music I play.

But what’s in a name: whilst studying my masters in Jungian & Post Jungian Studies, one of my classmates spoke about the fact that she’d considered changing her name because of the emotional baggage associated to it. I got it - alter egos allow for a certain separation or dissociation from ones typical identity and/or allows for another part of the self to shine through. For me it feels like part of the self I shouldn’t be.
Returning to the set, as I listened to the 6 tracks it felt like the development of a new friendship, charting the moments of getting to know each other, the initial highs of having things in common, the projections, the self realisations, the accepting the person in front of me and what that meant.
I developed the selection into a full set and as I included tracks that I didn’t think would fit at first, it was interesting to feel how they accurately soundtracked a topic I’d raised with my friend. Towards the end of the selection, the tracks seemed to foretell something that would occur in our friendship, something I felt dubious about (because how can tracks connect with a deeper knowing in this way?) yet trusted. Lo and behold, several months later it happened.
I set healing intentions for a set I played in March ‘24. My friend tuned in and said she experienced certain imagery that related to the intention. She had no clue about the intentions I’d set.

What is it that connects us that enables the transmission of psychological content etc., and how can it be in service to each other? See next post for more...

It feels so good to share this event which combines two of my passions: Deep House and Depth psychology which includes therapy and inner work to both heal and gain self knowledge.
